Save the Planet Brigade Presents

The Future
A Kids’ Comics Project for World War 3 Illustrated’s YOUTH STORIES

Workshops led by Rebecca Migdal at Bank Street Bookstore

This March, have your say about the Future of the Planet by participating in one of our four comics workshops for children of all ages. Together we'll discuss and learn about issues related to the future of our world, write and draw. Comics created by kids at the workshops will be published by a real magazine, World War 3 Illustrated.* Come collaborate, share and get your voice heard!

About the Magazine

World War 3 Illustrated has confronted social and political issues in comics form since 1980. The magazine is produced by a collective of artists with each issue addressing a particular theme. WW3 has covered the Tompkins Square riot, homelessness, first-person accounts of 9/11, the prison industrial complex, and Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.

Critic Lucy Lippard wrote of World War 3 Illustrated that its “ecological and social prophecies are coming to pass, and the apocalyptic vision that gives WW3 its desperate force and unique identity is the present.”

Visit the World War 3 Illustrated Web Site for more information.

There are four different times, so come to one, or come to all!
The workshops are FREE and open to all kids of every age.

March 1 Sun 2:30 pm
March 8 Sun 11 am
March 12 Thurs 4 pm
March 14 Sat 2:30 pm

*Comics not printed in the next issue will be published on the magazine's web site.

Bank Street Bookstore is getting ready to relocate to the corner of 107th Street and Broadway in early February, and plans are underway for decorating the beautifully built-out new space in a way that’s warm, magical and welcoming.

Stay tuned for status updates! As we near the end of the construction phase of the move, we’ll be posting video sneak peeks into the design process, including the floor plan, fixtures and custom displays.

The Velveteen Rabbit Video Featuring the Yippee Skippy Puppet Theater

Mon, 01/05/2015 - 9:11pm — RebeccaMigdal

A Fractured Fables Christmas Special.

A lucky Velveteen Rabbit becomes a little boy’s most beloved toy on Christmas Day. The other toys are jealous of Velveteen Rabbit, making fun of it and telling it the boy's love won't last. But the boy is never seen without his fuzzy friend at hand, playing with it until it's so worn and tattered that his father puts it away in the attic. The heartbroken Velveteen Rabbit is sure it will never see the little boy again, but an old rocking horse tells him there is a way with a little magic and a lot of love.

Performed 12-20-14 at Bank Street Bookstore. Puppeteer: Rebecca Migdal and Chelsea Camp. Accompanist: Andy Laties. Camera: Nere Kapiteni.

Hanukkah Puppet Show Videos: Fractured Fables

Mon, 12/29/2014 - 11:20am — RebeccaMigdal

The Hanukkah Cow

This puppet adaptation of "Hanukkah Bear" begins when a hibernating cow is awoken by the delicious smells of latkes and immediately goes in search of the source. An old, poor-sighted woman hears a knock at her door. She thinks it's the Rabbi arriving for a special Hanukkah meal. The strange mooing sounds the "Rabbi" makes cause her to worry for his health, but she happily feeds him all the latkes he wants.

Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins

Hershel is weary from his long travels and is happy to see a nearby village where he can spend the first night of Hanukkah. However, he is surprised to find no menorah candles have been lit. A villager tells him of the terrible goblins who ruin every Hanukkah and the task of breaking their evil curse is an impossible one. But brave and clever Hershel is willing to take the challenge to save Hanukkah.

It Could Always Be Worse

A poor man lives in a tiny home with his complaining wife and boisterous children. He can't take the chaos anymore and runs to the Rabbi for advice on what to do. It is advice that he wasn't expecting and soon regrets taking.

Performed 12-21-14 at Bank Street Bookstore. Puppeteer: Rebecca Migdal. Accompanist: Andy Laties. Camera: Nere Kapiteni.
