Program: Bully Prevention Lunch
Alton Middle School in Alton, Illinois, wants their students to be aware of and know how to deal with bullying. One way they promote awareness is through a Promising Practices program called the Monthly Student-Led Bully Prevention Lunch. Each month, sixth-grade students are given the opportunity to participate in interactive discussions or activities that teach ways to prevent bullying, while at the same time promoting a safe and welcoming school environment.
These lunch periods are led by older students, allowing for an open and honest discussion about the topic. The students learn appropriate responses to bullying and common language for preventing bullying. Activities include creating signs and banners with anti-bullying slogans to post around the school. The student leading the discussion and activities is chosen each month by his/her teachers and is representative of the middle school student population.
In accordance with CEP’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education, this Promising Practice program implements principle 4: creating a caring community. By teaching students how to care for one another and how to prevent bullying, the entire community of Alton will benefit.
The Character Education Partnership (CEP) created the Promising Practices program to foster school improvement by providing a proven framework, professional feedback, and models of excellence.
