In an effort to promote character education at their school, Alcoa Elementary School in Alcoa, Tennessee, has implemented a Promising Practices program called F.R.O.G.S. (Fathers Representing Our Great Students). Dads, grandfathers, uncles, step-dads, big brothers, etc., are encouraged to volunteer at their child’s school at least once a year.
Volunteer opportunities include helping with kindergarten “special” classes (art, music, PE, etc.), picking up trash on the school property, interacting with the students during lunch and/or recess, as well as helping in his child’s classroom if needed. Getting men involved with their child’s education is invaluable at this young age and sets an example for generations to come. This program also implements one of the principles set forth by CEP’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education: engaging families and community members as partners.
The Character Education Partnership (CEP) created the Promising Practices program to foster school improvement by providing a proven framework, professional feedback, and models of excellence.
