Roulette Strategy Guide

When it comes to winning at roulette using a strategy most of the information you will find is ore system than strategy. The fact of the matter is that betting systems do not work (See Gambling Systems). So is there anything you can do to give you an edge at the roulette table?

There is no way to overcome the natural roulette probabilities or the house edge. No betting strategy can change this and any winning strategy would require that you win consistently when playing roulette. Now that you know that you cannot change the odds there are a couple of things you can do.

  • Set a bankroll limit for your session at the roulette table
  • Make bets in proportion to your bankroll
  • Play through your bankroll only once
  • If you get ahead walk away from the table
  • If you lose do not chase your losses

Table Selection

One of the biggest strategy tips we can give you is to always play on tables with only one zero. The house edge is lower which in the long term will means you will win more (See American Vs European Roulette).

What to Bet On?

The roulette table offers a range of different bets with different pay outs. There is no hard and fast rules as to which to bet on. It depends on what your aim is. If you want to have a roughly 50/50 chance of winning on each spin then the even money bets like Red / Black or High / Low are good. (It's not exactly 50/50 as the zero coming up will lose for all of the even money bets). The pay out for these bets is 1 to 1 so you will have to have a very good run to get a big win.

If you would rather have a smaller chance of winning but a bigger chance of getting a big win then the inside bets are a better choice. Betting on one number pays 35 to 1 so just one correct guess will give you a big win. Of course the probability of correctly guessing one number is only 2.7% on a single zero table and around 5% on a double zero table.

How Much To Bet?

You should always bet in proportion to your bankroll. The lower the amount of bets you can make increases your risk or ruin - the chance that you will lose your whole bankroll before you get a win. So for example if you have a $100 bankroll it is better to make $5 bets than it is to make $25 bets. Of course this also depends on your aim. If you want a quick shot at a big win you might just place $100 on a single number. Most of the time however you are looking to get entertainment value out of your money so you want to make as many bets as possible.
