Philippe Castanet President & CEO
EDF Group North America Delegate

Philippe Castanet was appointed President and CEO of EDF Inc. on June 1st, 2014.  In this role, and as EDF North America Delegate, he is responsible for the development of the EDF Group in this region and the coordination of EDF’s various existing operations in generation, renewable energy, trading, and research and development.

Castanet serves as the Chairman of EDF Inc. Board of Directors, Vice-Chairman of Constellation Energy Nuclear Group LLC Board of Directors, Board Director of EDF Trading Holdings LLC and EDF Renewable Energy Inc.

Castanet has worked in the energy business for 30 years and has held numerous management positions in the areas of generation, commerce, networks, finance, strategy, and business development.  

Most recently, Castanet served as Chief Executive Officer of EDF Polska in Warsaw, Poland from October 2008 to April 2014.  In that role, he oversaw operations providing 10% of electricity consumed in Poland and 15% of the heat delivered to district heating systems, employing 3,500 employees.  Under his leadership, Poland became a priority country for the EDF Group resulting in more than doubling the investment program to over €300 million per year.

Previously, Castanet worked at EDF Energy, a subsidiary of the EDF Group in the United Kingdom, from 1999 to 2008. During his tenure in the UK, he held several positions which included Managing Director-Major Business where he was responsible for the largest sales operations to business consumers in the UK.  He also served as Head of Corporate Finance and M&A for this subsidiary from 1999 to 2002.

From 1998 to 1999, Castanet held the role of Senior Project Manager and Financial Advisor in EDF’s International Division where, among other responsibilities, he led the project team for the acquisition of London Electricity.

He was appointed in 1994 to the World Bank in Washington, D.C. as a Project Manager in the Africa Region Infrastructure Department.  For three years, he was in charge of negotiating and supervising energy projects in West Africa as well as conducting energy sector work in the region for the International Monetary Fund.

Castanet graduated as a Power Engineer, specialized in Nuclear Physics, from the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble.

Patrick Blandin Executive Vice-President
Finance, and Treasurer

Patrick Blandin joined EDF Inc. in July of 2011 as Executive Vice President in charge of Finance, also holding the position of EDF Inc.’s Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer.

Patrick retains his position as Chief Financial Officer at UniStar Nuclear Energy LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EDF Inc.

Before joining UniStar, Patrick was head of business intelligence for EDF Group’s risk management division, and General Secretary of the Group’s Emergency and Situation Room.

Previously, Patrick held positions within the Group as head of mergers and acquisitions, senior financial advisor within mergers and acquisitions, financial advisor for project finance and head of the French franc treasury desk for EDF’s cash management division.  

Prior to joining EDF in 1990, Patrick was deputy treasurer for Western Europe for General Electric Medical Systems in Paris.

Patrick earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from the McComb Business School at the University of Texas at Austin, and from the E. M. Lyon Graduate Business School in Lyon, France. He is a lieutenant commander in the French Naval Reserve Forces, and resides in Houston.

Joseph Sanchez Senior Vice-President
Nuclear

Joseph Sanchez joined EDF Inc. is Senior Vice President for nuclear activities. In this position, he supervises nuclear opportunities and maintains solid cooperation relationships that link the EDF Group to the majors North American nuclear players.


Before joining EDF Inc. in June of 2014, Joseph Sanchez was assigned by EDF to work for four years within the General Management of Taishan Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company, a Chinese French company in charge of building and operating the two first EPR units in China.


Prior to this Executive position, he has been in charge of International Projects in EDF Nuclear Operations headquarters from 2007 to 2010, overseeing or responsible for projects related to new build overseas and relationships with other operators.


From 2003 to 2007, he has been Site Vice-President, Director of Fessenheim Nuclear Power Plant (France), a two 900 MW pressurized water reactor site where he was also Plant Manager after being Nuclear Safety and Quality Manager.


He started his career in EDF Nuclear Operations as a Simulator Instructor in Bugey Training Centre in 1981. He then occupied various Management positions within Belleville Nuclear Power Plant, a two 1300 MW units, especially during the commissioning period of both units. At that time, Joseph built experience working within the US nuclear industry, as interface engineer in San Onofre Nuclear Station (USA), coordinating sharing of experience between this US plant and Belleville Nuclear Power Plant. His 33 year EDF career in nuclear energy has given him a broad experience in different areas such as plant management, nuclear safety, operations, maintenance, training, engineering, experience he has shared with other operators worldwide.


Joseph Sanchez graduated as an engineer from the Ecole Nationale des Arts et Métiers in 1980.

Edward Jarmas Senior Vice-President
Business Development

Ed Jarmas is Senior Vice President for Business Development at EDF Inc. responsible for the development and origination of investment opportunities in the US.


Ed joined EDF in 2008 as Senior Vice President Projects with Unistar Nuclear Energy, LLC and as General Manager of the proposed new nuclear reactor.


Ed served as senior consultant to PPL Development Company from 2004 through 2008 and previously as Senior Vice President Marketing & Business Development at PG&E National Energy Group from 2001 through 2003 where he managed US gas marketing and power generation development activities.


Prior to that he was Vice President at Columbia Electric Corporation from 1997 to 2001 where he was responsible for all fuel, power sales, and gas fired generation development. From 1992 to 1997, he served as Group Manager for Destec Energy’s domestic and international development activities in the Americas, Caribbean, Europe, and Australia.


Ed held various engineering, planning, and marketing assignments early in his career with Tenneco Gas and United Gas Pipeline based in Houston, TX.


He earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Rutger’s University and a M.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Houston.

Mark Anderson Senior Vice-President
Public Affairs

Mark Anderson is Senior Vice President of –Public Affairs for EDF Inc., supporting the EDF Group’s interests in U.S. federal legislative and regulatory policy. He is an active participant in several industry trade associations to develop and pursue policy advocacy strategies. Mark serves on the Board of the American Council for Renewable Energy. Mark first joined the EDF group of companies as the Director of Projects at Unistar, LLC where he was tasked with the negotiation and management of contracts.

Mark brings over 20 years of international development experience in oil, gas, chemicals and water. Before EDF, his senior roles included International Business Development Manager for Bechtel Corporation, COO of a financial services firm and Managing Director of an international commodities trading company.

Mark earned his B.A. in Economics from Trinity College and an M.B.A. from INSEAD. Fluent in five languages, Mark resides in Washington D.C. with his wife and three children.

Michael Hill General Counsel

Michael Hill is General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of EDF Inc., where he is responsible for all aspects of the company’s legal and regulatory affairs related to its 49.99% interest in Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, its wholly owned subsidiary UniStar Nuclear Energy and new investment opportunities in North America.

Michael has over thirteen years of experience providing legal and strategic advice to public and private companies.  Prior to joining EDF Inc. in December 2011, he practiced law for ten years in the Washington, D.C. of Baker Botts L.L.P., where his practice was concentrated in merger and acquisition, joint venture, and financing transactions for a range of foreign and domestic clients, primarily in the energy, mining and defense sectors.

Michael holds a B.A. in American History and Geology from Washington & Lee University, a M.A. in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University, and a J.D. from the University Of Maryland School Of Law.

Magdalena Francois-Thurin Director
Human Resources and Corporate Functions

Magdalena Francois-Thurin is the Director of Human Resources and Corporate Functions of EDF Inc. She oversees the Corporation's HR functions, Administrative structure, and Communication affairs. Translating EDF Group and EDF Inc.'s strategy into HR and Communication programs, she participates, as a strategic partner, in the development of EDF Inc.


Magdalena joined EDF Inc. in January 2014. Prior to that, she was the Executive Coordinator for the EDF Group South and South East Asia Division, then for the EDF Group Asia Pacific Direction. She has been involved in the major power generation projects of the EDF Group in this region, including the Nam Theun 2 hydropower plant in Laos, and the Taishan project, first nuclear EPR units outside Europe.


She has been living and working in Asia for seven years, from 2006 to 2013, first in Hong Kong, PRC, then in Bangkok, Thailand, where she started working for the EDF Group, and finally in Beijing, PRC.


Magdalena is a former student of the Ecole normale supérieure de lettres et sciences humaines (ENS-LSH2003). She also holds a Master in Economic History from the Sorbonne University and a MBA from the ESCP Europe Business School - Asian Institute of Technology.

Jan Van Der Lee Director
R&D Center

Jan van der Lee is Director of the EDF R&D Center, located in Silicon Valley. In this position, he supervises the activities of the R&D Center’s activities, which partners with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and works in real time with leading companies seeking innovation and new technologies. He is also responsible for creating collaborative networks with Universities, national laboratories, and industrial leaders in the energy sector. Today, EDF collaborates with MIT, Stanford and Berkeley, among others.


Prior to his current position, Jan van der Lee was Director of the Materials Ageing Institute (MAI), an international organization of scientific collaboration among the world’s largest nuclear utilities and related industries from France, USA, UK, Russia, China and Japan. He created the MAI Scientific Network, gathering experts in materials degradation science from about 20 universities worldwide. Jan van der Lee furthermore collaborates in several international initiatives which focus on safe long-term operation of nuclear power plants, is member of the Bureau of SFANS (French branch of the American Nuclear Society), SFC (French Society for Chemistry, Physical Chemistry Division) and of Paul Scherrer Institute’s Scientific Committee.


Before joining EDF in 2009, he was researcher and professor at Mines-ParisTech for close to 20 years.


He received his M.S. degree from the Amsterdam Free University in 1989 and subsequently his Ph.D. from Mines-Paris-Tech. He is fluent in English, French, German and Dutch.
