Happening Gourmand is in it’s 8th year. I was one of the many bloggers who attended a dinner, at Verses in particular, to taste what was being offered. I was also one of the few who hosted the event, which as you may have heard, came with a price. More on that later. For now, I’m going to tell you what you need to know about this event.

Recipe: Squash and Potato Knishes – The Little Potato Company

Boiled, mashed, fried, baked, or braised, potatoes are one of the most versatile vegetables around. Whether drenching them in  rich holiday gravy, mixing it with crispy bacon bits and chives, or just a simple dash of salt, potatoes are always delicious. For this recipe, I used a bunch of special ones courtesy of The Little Potato Company. They make many different varieties, where I used a mix of fingerling and blushing belles (or little red potatoes). To sweeten it up, I used some butternut squash roasted with garlic and thyme. This is a great simple recipe with only a few ingredients that’ll definitely impress your guests.

Le Sieur D’Iberville: Chicken and Gravy All Over

L’avenue du Mont-Royal. So many great places to eat. On one end, dine at Le Filet, grab some Venezuelan food from Bocadillos, feast on some of the city’s best croissants at Kouign Amann, slurp on delicious ramen noodles at Saka-Ba, or grab a drink or two at the many funky and cool bars. There’s no doubt this street is alive and fun. It runs through the plateau like the “fleuve” through Quebec. At the very east end, and I mean end, of l’avenue du Mont-Royal sits one of Montreal’s latest gems:Le Sieur D’Iberville. Literally translated to “The Mister Iberville”, this new hot spot is situated right on the corner of Iberville and Mont-Royal. The chef behind it is Stephen Leslie of Taverne on the Square and the Monkland Taverne. I’ve been to both Tavernes, and if you have too, then you know how good they are and how well Stephen runs his restaurants.

Brunching at Maison Publique

spacer It’s Saturday morning. After a relatively tame night, in my groggy state, I’ve got one thing on my mind: where am I going to eat this late morning/early afternoon. Do I want breakfast? There’s plenty of places for good breakfast. Do I want lunch? There’s plenty of places for good lunch. Nah. I want both. Teetering on the edge of both meals, brunch is that happy medium Montrealers in my contemplative situation look forward to on the weekend. It’s a simple solution though. The delicious combination of the two meals allows chefs to exhibit their creative chops through dishes that are borderline both. There are many many restaurants these days offering brunch menus. Some who’s bread and butter is dinner, some who’s main thing is actual brunch, and some who do both really well. Maison Publique is one of those places.

Dinner at Home: Lime-Creole Shrimp with Quinoa

spacer I love cooking. If you’ve been following me on Instagram over the last year or so, you may have noticed a few more home-cooked meals than before. That’s because I recently moved into a condo where one of my “needs” was to have a good kitchen, which I got. When I cook, I usually try to eat healthier even though it may seem as if my caloric intake is higher than the norm. Perception is everything I guess. Since this new kitchen entered my life, I’ve learned the value of a well-stocked pantry extending to the fridge. That means, plenty of spices, a few select grains or seeds, aromatics and basic vegetables, herbs, plenty of citrus, proteins, sauces, and cheeses. This led me to my latest recipe: Lime-Creole Shrimp with Quinoa.

Food Guy Montreal’s Best Bites of 2013

January 10, 2014 General Food

2013 is in the books. I ate a lot. I found this year’s cuisine to be less formal than usual. The casual eats shined while a couple big dishes left me wanting more. A balance of flavors, textures, and aromas left lasting impressions. I was surprised at how amazing some new places were, and how […]

Hof Kelsten: Bread at its Finest

December 9, 2013 Restaurants

Do you like bread? Who doesn’t. There’s nothing like the sound of perfect crust crackling, or the aroma emanating from the soft center. When you’re holding bread, GOOD bread, you observe, listen, smell, touch, and finally taste. When it’s done well, you know it. I’m not talking about that stuff which can probably survive a […]

Le Vin Papillon: The Wine Bar You’ve Been Looking For

October 19, 2013 Restaurants

“I’ve got new place opening up soon.” “Where?” “Right there. I want a place where I can walk over, drink good wine, eat well, and not care about reservations.” “Sounds awesome. I’ll definitely be there.” That’s pretty much how my short conversation went with Dave McMillan a few months ago while standing in front of […]

De la rue aux étoiles 2013 – From the Street to the Stars 2013

September 25, 2013 Food Media

Every year, I’m unable to do it. The timing isn’t right, or generally, life gets in the way. This year, I’m in and I can’t wait! I really enjoy community events in Montreal. Oysterfest was a blast, I’ve been doing a couple cooking lessons in the Marché Saint-Anne, and participating/eating during Burger Week was fun […]

Get Ready Montreal!

August 27, 2013 Food Media

Are you dreading to say your goodbyes to summer? I am, and I’m not ready to let it go just yet. Yes, festival season is over, but there’s still a bunch of great events happening in Montreal in the next couple of weeks. There’s plenty of time to get in some good eats, while the […]
