The best family holiday destinations in the UK

January 3, 2013 By Jen

I love traveling to Europe, and I can’t wait to take Levi on his first trip overseas. Ok, I’m not looking forward to keeping him occupied on the plane ride there and back, but the other parts should be great spacer I was talking to my friend Carly about potential destinations, and she generously offered to write a guest post to share some of her favorite spots in the UK.

If you are the proud Mother of a wonderful brood and want nothing more than to take them away for a few days – you should look no further than the UK. There are great cheap holiday deals to be found in locations across the nation that offer adventure, excitement and most of all, some well-deserved R and R. Here is a list of some of the best spots the UK has to offer.

Cornwall

What more can you want from a family getaway than what you are offered from the delights of Cornwall? Beautiful beaches, delectable cream teas, hearty Cornish pasties, an abundance of activities to choose from and lots of fascinating history. With so much to do, there is no way that any of the family will get bored…and hopefully, the sun will shine. Fingers crossed!

The New Forest

If your idea of a perfect family getaway is a charming hotel deep in the heart of the English countryside then look no further than the New Forest. As well as lots of sporting activities like horse-riding, hiking and cycling, the region is easily accessible from most parts of the country and is very family friendly.

Take to the canals

It may not be the obvious choice but taking the network of canals across the country can provide an incredibly enjoyable family holiday which will guarantee wonderful memories. Perhaps you can divide your time between a cozy B & B or hotel and actually living aboard a narrow boat. Get the whole family involved in navigating the waterways. Don’t forget to take the time to stop off for a good old fashioned pub lunch, dock up and have a family game of rounders or even take all those board games you got given last Christmas and challenge the kids to a hilarious game. Popular areas for these types of holidays tend to be around the Norfolk Broads or around the Grand Union Canals just outside of Oxford.

Lake District

If you are concerned about your children not getting the fresh air that they need when you are going about your lives back home, there is no better way to shake free from those cobwebs than with a trip to the Lake District. Whether you want to try your hand at sailing, are keen to pass on some orienteering know-how or are more than happy to take your kids on fun trips out to the Lakes Aquarium, Grizedale Forests or Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm, there is no doubt that after all the wholesome outdoor activities, they’ll be falling into happy and satisfied sleep at the dinner table.

When you talk about the teas and pastries in Cornwall, that alone is almost enough to get me over there!
