Research in Human Geography

Research in Human Geography, focuses on a wide range of contemporary and historical issues connected to the meanings and uses of space, place and landscape. The department boasts a diverse range of scholars of international renown. Current work includes research into geographies of illumination, post-socialist societies, memory and heritage, sexuality and globalisation, urban materiality, geographies of religion, the politics of flood defences, spectral geographies and activist networks.

Researchers employ an array of cutting edge theoretical approaches to the study of space, place and landscape and are frequently invited to international conferences. We make the most of our location in the fascinating city of Manchester but also extend research to regional, national and global contexts and focus upon both historical and contemporary issues. Possessing strong academic reputations internationally and prominent in national media, human geography scholars examine questions of class, gender, religious and national identities, and possess particular expertise in areas of geographies of illumination, sacred geographies, post-socialism, tourism, sexual geographies, urban resilience, and urban materiality and dereliction.
