KITZBUEHEL, Austria (Jan. 26) – Dominik Paris became the first Italian since the great Kristian Ghedina to win the famed Hahnenkamm downhill for his second Audi FIS Alpine World Cup downhill win this season. Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, CA) posted the top U.S. Ski Team finish with 19th as both Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT) and Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) missed a gate on the treacherous side hill just above the finish pitch. Universal Sports Network will air the thrilling classic at 10:30 a.m. ET as part of Winter Bowl Weekend.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Italian Dominik Paris mastered the gnarly Streif in Kitzbuehel to become the first Italian since 1998 to win the Hahnenkamm downhill.
- Canadian Erik Guay finished second ahead of Hannes Reichelt of Austria.
- Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, CA) posted the top U.S. finish with 19th. Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) was 24th and Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, NY) 34th.
- Steven Nyman (Sundance, UT) and Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) had solid runs going, but got low on the side hill traverse and went out above the finish pitch.
- Universal Sports Network will air the race at 10:30 a.m. ET.
- Action continues in Kitzbuehel on Sunday with slalom and the second half of a traditional combined, the final races before World Championships.
- Ganong and Weibrecht will join the U.S. slalom skiers in order to compete for combined points.
- The U.S. Ski Team will name its World Championship squad on Monday, Jan. 28.

It was really tough conditions, the track got really icy and bumpy throughout the week. Last night it was really cold and the surface got pretty hard. It was the real deal this year, definitely rough and tough, but it was fun.
The speed coming off Hausberg onto the side hill at the bottom was a little faster today and that kind of threw some people off guard. Things were coming at you a lot quicker. That's where I had some problems too. In the training runs you could release the ski a little bit earlier there and have no problem making the last gate, but today you couldn't do that. I had to scramble to make the last gate on the side hill.
I'm at the point now where I'm not just skiing to finish. I'm really charging and taking chances and risking more. With that will come mistakes, but it also brings a lot more speed and a puts you in the fight for the podium. Things are going in the right direction for me and I can't wait for World Champs.
