San Carlos Center Topped Out

There are several key milestones in construction and one is the “topping out” of a building. On Friday, February 1, 2013, the steel structure of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s San Carlos Center on 101 Industrial Road in San Carlos,Calif., was topped out to the cheering of the more than 100 construction workers and PAMF leaders.

In building construction, the topping out is a steelworkers’ traditional ceremony to celebrate when the last beam is placed at the top of a building. The last beam is painted white so that everyone’s signature shows, then it is decorated with the national flag and a small evergreen to symbolize growth and bring luck.

While Skanska construction company work crew was treated to a barbeque lunch, they were addressed by Tony Marzoni, M.D., PAMF executive vice president and president of PAMF’s Palo Alto Division. Dr. Marzoni thanked the steelworkers for their hard work in getting the project to this milestone. He explained what the new San Carlos Center will house and why it is vital to the community.

After being signed by all present, the beam was hoisted by a large crane into place at the top of what will become the fourth floor of the medical center.

PAMF’s San Carlos Center will be a state-of–the-art, full service medical center which will house 75 physicians (with future capacity to house 120 physicians) and provide a range of primary and specialty care services, an Urgent Care Center, an outpatient surgery center, and complete laboratory and diagnostic imaging departments. The projected opening date is fall 2014.

With approximately 100 workers onsite daily and 50,000 work hours invested in the project to-date, the structural progress is impressive. Steel work on the bridge and “hub” that will eventually connect the medical center with the hospital and surgery center is underway. Retaining walls for the parking structure are being built in preparation for the foundation pouring.

Skanska’s site superintendent William Bunch thanked the crew for their hard work and excellent safety record. He explained how the project is using integrated project delivery to complete the project more quickly and efficiently than traditional construction methods.

Bunch also quantified what materials the crews and subcontractors have installed thus far:

  • Berkel & Co.: 1,000 piles (clinic and garage)
  • McGuire and Hester:  13,000 feet of pipe, 15,000 cubic yards of excavation and backfill, 15000 cubic yards of grading
  • Southland Pipe Corp.: 7,800 feet of pipe
  • Redwood Electric Group: 32,000 feet of conduit
  • Pankow: 2,800 cubic yards of concrete with 260 tons of rebar by Harris-Salinas Rebar
  • Schuff Steel: 2,845,224 pounds or 1,423 tons – a total of 3,282 pieces.

With the steel structure complete, the next stages of construction of the medical building will include site work, underground infrastructure, building structures and exterior finishes, as well as completion of the 1,155-space, four-level parking garage, which has already begun.

From September 2013 through November 2014, the construction will move inside, including installation of utilities, technology systems, medical equipment and interior finishes. Landscaping and hardscaping (sidewalks, paving, etc.) will be completed last, prior to the projected opening of the medical center in the fall of 2014.

There is a live web cam positioned along Industrial Road, facing the site entrance, which takes a photo about every 10 minutes and can generate a time-lapse image.
