World Committee on Tourism Ethics

spacer Established in 2004, the World Committee on Tourism Ethics is the impartial body responsible for interpreting, applying and evaluating the provisions of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. For further information, please see UNWTO General Assembly Resolution A/RES/607(XIX) of October 2011.

The tasks assigned to the Committee include the promotion and dissemination of the Code of Ethics, as well as the evaluation and monitoring of the implementation of the principles enshrined therein.

As a subsidiary organ of the UNWTO General Assembly, the Committee reports directly to the Assembly. Members are elected in their personal capacities and not as officials of governments or representatives of their countries.

Rovinj, Croatia, 26-27 May 2015

The Fifteenth meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics was held in Rovinj, Croatia on 26-27 May, followed by the 100 Session of the UNWTO Executive CouncilThe main focus of the meeting of the Ethics Committee on this occasion was the conversion of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism into an international convention. Additionally, Members reviewed the latest updates on the implementation of the principles of the Code by governments and the public sector and touched upon the priority areas of work by seconding a set of specific recommendations on accessible tourist information, and listening to a speech by Carol Bellamy, Chair of the UNWTO World Tourism Network on Child Protection and former Director of UNICEF, on the importance of Child Protection in tourism.

14th Meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics

Rome, Italy, 17-18 November 2014

The Fourteenth meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics was held in Rome, Italy, back-to-back with the 1st UNWTO Conference on Accessible Tourism in Europe to which Committee members actively contributedBesides the issue of accessibility, the Committee also debated about the ethical impliactions of the promotion of fair models of all-inclusive holidays, the impact on tourism of unfounded ratings on travel portals and the effect of the rise of sharing economy in tourism.

The Thirteenth meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, was held in Madrid Spain, on the 26 of February 2014. The Members of the Committee established the Action Plan for the coming four years, giving priority to fighting children exploitation, trafficking and poaching and promoting accessible tourism.

The Twelfth Meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, held in Madrid, Spain, on the 4th and 5th of March 2013, commended the UNWTO Private Sector Commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism initiative and praised the growing number of signatory businesses who pledged to uphold responsible conduct in the tourism sector. Importance of “Safe Coastal Tourism”

The Eleventh Meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, held in Rome, Italy, closed with calls to make “Safe Coastal Tourism” a priority in coastal destinations worldwide. The body further discussed the fight against human trafficking and child exploitation, the road to greater gender equality and accessibility in tourism, and developments for the protection of tourists/consumers and tourism enterprises. With reference to the latter, the Committee reiterated its support for UNWTO’s preparation of an international legal instrument in this area. Click here for more information

Committee meeting and Seminar on Tourism Ethics for Asia and the Pacific

Held in parallel with the first UNWTO Seminar on Tourism Ethics for Asia and the Pacific: Responsible Tourism and its Socio-Economic Impact on Local Communities, the 10th meeting of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics took place in Bali, Indonesia. Members discussed such topics as the protection of tourists/consumers and travel organizers, the impact of recent events in the Middle East and North Africa on tourism, human rights and tourism, the voice of civil society in tourism planning and management processes, the economic empowerment of women, and the protection of children, through tourism, and tourism accessibility.
