THE YEAR OF THE BOOK WORM

I used to read, a lot – like a book a week, when I was commuting to work. Then I had kids, I still read pretty often but at that point it was mostly books about buns in the oven, boobs and milk. Then I starting blogging/working from home and my reading pretty much went to zlitch.

Last year I vowed to read more, I didn’t do as well as I had hoped (see also: not very well at all) – but I did read more, going from nothing to something is well, something. I am coining 2014 THE YEAR OF THE BOOK WORM, I have a new book and I am read to go – I hope/plan to read a book a month. I figure if I can find time to practice yoga once a day I can find time to read. These are some of the books I really want to get to this year (a pretty wide range of topics, I like a little of this and that and everything in between), and I’m sure once I get rolling there will be many I want to add to this list.

1ST ROW: a house in the sky – present shock – burial rites
2ND ROW: the tipping point – detroit – the goldfinch
3RD ROW: the wisdom of yoga – it – i forgot to remember
4TH ROW: last night at the viper room – the seven spiritual laws for parents – inside

A couple months ago I read Brain On Fire and Orange Is The New Black – both were really really great. I’m a big fan of Non-Ficton and self help books (I like books I can learn from), but a drop of Fiction here or there is also really great. There are always so many books I want to read, but I get caught up in the sticker price (I like to own a book so I can pass it on, part of the fun) and then time (usually I tell myself it’s the lack of time) talks me out of doing it – this year, I’m not going to let any of those excuses into my home.

Are you like me and need to get your nose in a book more? Or do you read a lot, if so tell me about some of the great books you have read lately?

*someone once told me, that you can tell a lot about someone by the books they read – pretty sure I just gave that person a whole lot of all over the place information, about myself.

FAVORITE POSTS OF 2013

2013 was a grand year, in terms of life, love, family, friends and this here blog. For some of those amazing life moments I was able to capture small part of them on the blog, for which I am always so grateful. I’m not going to talk much about goals, resolutions, or plans for the new year – I have a lot of goals (for work and this blog) but mostly I like to set intentions that I can live every day. Intentions for life that I can breathe in each day, and mantras for the entire year. Rather then a resolution to change, I like plans and reminders to aim to be better instead. I have always been a less is more, a need only type of girl so this minimal and thoughtful way of setting a simple single goal is what always works best for me. I highly recommend it, think of an intention (or a theme) you’d like to set and try your best to live it everyday of 2014.

2013 was really great to me and my little family, and as the hours creep closer to the close of this year I thought it would be fun (for me and you) to take a stroll back through some of my favorite and yours (based on likes, comments and pins) posts of 2013.

  • BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK quite possibly the sweetest man with the most natural eye for style.
  • BORN RICH extremely interesting to see how the other side lives.
  • INTO THE ABYSS a little jaw dropping, a lot saddening and parts will make you feel uneasy – but I finished the movie seeing things differently.
  • KEN BURNS actually any doc series by Ken Burns is amazing, I don’t even like baseball and I dug this doc. This is one is in Chris’ top 5.
  • WHO IS HARRY NILSSON? if you just answered with I don’t know, then you must watch it.
  • THE WHALE another look at how amazing whales are, from a totally different point of view them usual.
  • DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS the boys who started skateboarding, the original skateboard stars.
  • A PLACE AT THE TABLE if you liked wating for superman, this is like the food version of that. Incredibly eye opening.
  • GIRL 27 an old Hollywood scandal that was covered up – warning it’s sad.
  • BLACKFISH really a must see, I will never look at these beautiful mammals the same way again.
  • DETROPIA I am a bit obsessed with learning about Detroit, and this doc visualized so much I was curious about.
  • LOUIS THEROUX I couldn’t pick just one, every doc I’ve seen from him has been riveting, a bit disturbing and truly made me see things in a new light.
  • SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN I cannot believe I forgot to add this one to both lists (so I’m squeezing it in at the bottom, but it’s not in the bottom), it is mind blowing and a fantastic real life super happy ending story.

If you missed my first list of favorites, check them here. Also a big notable mention to ESPN’s 30 for 30 series, Chris loves every single one of those documentaries. Usually I’ll say I don’t want to watch them, then am later asking him to pause so I can pee (classic). I have a longish list of docs I want to check out, but would love to hear if you have any favorites I should watch!

*Many of these are currently on Netflix, others possibly iTunes – a lot of them we have seen years ago (so I’m not 100% certain where they are available now).

Sometimes our friends call us TV snobs, sometimes we like to trade in our friends. Kidding, very much kidding but in all honesty – Chris and I are some picky TV and movie watchers (if being a TV snob is so wrong, I don’t want to be right). We nixed cable 3 years ago, and have been living off the internet and Netflix ever since. Which has worked out perfectly for us and we don’t really miss cable at all. We watch only those shows and movies we really love and leave the other TV time for other things that waste our time and eat our brains, like the internet. 9 times out of 10, if we don’t have an episode of a favorite show to watch – we are shacked up on the couch watching a doc.
