What We're Up To

Submitted by Steve Hanson on Thu, 01/21/2010 - 5:20pm

Wistowns is a project to build a network of simple web sites for townships and other small governmental organizations in Wisconsin.  it is currently a second-round competitor in the Knight News Challenge.  We are hoping that we will attract enough funding to move forward with the project and make these web sites available to townships in Wisconsin for free for the first year (with a very minimal charge for hosting and maintenance after that year).

The sites will be very simple to use, and will not require technical skills beyond the basic ability to use a web browser. The project is currently in prototyping with a few small townships in the state, and will be moving forward if/when we find a funding source.

Update

Submitted by Steve Hanson on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 3:23pm

We're in the process of doing code development.  Unfortunately the Knight News Challenge rejected this applicaiton for funding, so things will progress, but at a slower pace. The basic notion of this application is to build a Software-As-A-Service application for Wisconsin Townships.  Each township will have its own web site which will be based in the Drupal content management system.  Their site will allow them to easily update their own site and to add in meetings, agendas, minutes, ordinances, and quite a lot more.  Additionally, there will be some common content that will be available to all of the townships (this will be content that is consistent across the state -- voting resources, etc.). We are at the moment working with a small number of townships to build prototypes for the service, and hope to release the  packages this summer.
