Greetings from Dean Hegab

spacer Welcome to the College of Engineering and Science

We have a distinguished and long-standing legacy in engineering and science education and are producing the Best Engineers and Scientists for Tomorrow. We offer an array of innovative degree programs from the bachelor’s level to the doctoral level that provide our graduates with the critical knowledge and skills to enable them to have successful careers. Our faculty take pride in developing and delivering hands-on, project-driven experiences for our students to learn engineering and science through relevant frameworks. Our Living with the Lab freshman curriculum is an internationally recognized example of this that provides our first year engineering students with an experiential learning experience that is not found at other universities. We also offer many exciting and distinctive opportunities for students outside of the classroom such as the National Academy Grand Challenges Scholar Program, which is currently available from only a handful of universities across the nation. We have many active student groups that regularly compete in regional and national competitions such as our student concrete canoe team, steel bridge team, mini-baja team, or our Shell Eco-car team. Our Eco-car team currently holds the North American record for high mileage in the Shell Eco-marathon Urban Car Diesel competition (488.7 mpg).

We also offer outstanding research programs with internationally recognized faculty and access to world-class research facilities. Some of our physics faculty played a significant role in the discovery the Higgs Boson at CERN in Geneva this past year as part of the ATLAS collaboration. We have several NSF CAREER award winners that provide our students the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research. We graduated 22 Ph.D. students during 2014-15 and our research expenditures have averaged over $15M during the past three years. Our research programs are focused through six active research centers: the Institute for Micromanufacturing, Trenchless Technology Center, Center for Biomedical Engineering and Rehabilitation Services, Center for Applied Physics, Integrated STEM Education Research Center, and the Center for Secure Cyberspace.

We are in the design phase of building a new Integrated Engineering and Science Building that will provide 128,000 square feet of space to expand our focus on project-driven curricula. The building will provide active, integrated learning environments for our first and second year engineering and science undergraduates and be located in close proximity to Bogard and Nethken Halls. It is part of our strategic plan to help attract, retain, and train the BEST engineering and science students.

Louisiana Tech is a special place that offers an exciting environment that allows students, faculty, and staff to attain their maximum potential. We consider the success of our students to be the primary standard for our success, so I invite you to visit our campus, tour our facilities, meet our talented faculty and students, and discover what Louisiana Tech University and the College of Engineering and Science have to offer.

Best Regards,
