The Goddard Earth Observing System Model, Version 5 (GEOS-5) is a system of models integrated using the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF). The GEOS-5 Data Assimilation System (GEOS-5 DAS) integrates the GEOS-5 Atmospheric Global Climate Model (GEOS-5 AGCM) with the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) atmospheric analysis developed jointly with NOAA/NCEP/EMC. The GEOS-5 systems are being developed in the GMAO to support NASA's earth science research in data analysis, observing system modeling and design, climate and weather prediction, and basic research.

GEOS-5 is supported by NASA's Modeling Analysis and Prediction (MAP) Program.

  • 7 October 2010. GEOS5 AGCM can now be downloaded through geos5.org subversion repository. GEOS-5 public AGCM Documentation and Access.
  • 2 April 2009. Documentation section now has an entry describing GEOS-5 configurations used to support specific missions.
  • 16 November 2007. The GEOS-5 Forecasting System, including a wealth of meteorological and chemical constituents/aerosols, will be supporting the Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS) during the Spring and Summer of 2008. A description of the GEOS-5 Configuration for ARCTAS is available.
  • 1 November 2006. GEOS-5 AGCM Release 1.0 is now available from the MAP Software Repository. This is the first component released from the GEOS-5 System. Climate simulations and DAS integrations have been undertaken with this release and some results are presented in the Results section of this page. See the Release notes for details of this release.

GEOS Advanced ADAS: Three-dimensional Hybrid and Four-dimensional Variational Data Assimilation System

The GMAO atmospheric data assimilation system is a three-dimensional variational 3DVAR system that combines the GMAO atmospheric general circulation model [AGCM] with the jointly-developed GMAO/NCEP Grid-point Statistical Interpolation GSI analysis.

GMAO is in the process of upgrading its 3DVAR system to use hybrid ensemble-variational approach where the ensemble will be generated using the ensemble Kalman filter [EnKF].

To make better use of satellite observations the GMAO has extended its 3DVAR to implement an atmospheric four-dimensional variational (4DVAR) system that adds the forward model as a constraint to the analysis minimization problem. The 4DVAR extension of the GEOS ADAS brings in the tangent linear and adjoint models of the GEOS cubed-sphere hydrodynamics with simplified linearized physics and various upgrades to GSI.
