Latino Campaign
The Network for a Healthy California – Latino Campaign is a public health initiative led by the California Department of Health Services and administered by the Public Health Institute.
Mission:
To empower low-income Latino adults ages 18-54 years old and their families to consume the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and enjoy physical activity every day; 30 minutes for adults and 60 minutes for school age children.
Goal:
The Network for a Healthy California – Latino Campaign objectives are designed to reduce the risks of chronic diseases, especially cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Latino Health Statistics:
- Among California Latinos, heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes account for nearly 60% of all deaths.
- More than 40% of California Latino men and women are overweight while 29% are obese.
- The CDC estimates that 10% of California Latinos have diabetes.
- 18% of California Latinos have been diagnosed with hypertension.
- Only 43% of California Latino adults engage in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week, while about 27% participate in 20 minutes of vigorous physical activity at least three times a week.
Retail Channel:
Food demonstrations and merchandising activities are conducted at qualifying grocery stores. Point-of-sale signs and food demonstrations remind event participants how to include more fruits and vegetables in their daily meals and snacks.
Festival & Other Community Events:
Community Health Leaders communicate key health messages that promote eating the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and enjoying physical activity at Latino festivals and other community events.
Farmers & Flea Market Channel:
Community health leaders demonstrate quick and easy fruit and vegetable recipes.
Community-Based Organizations & Direct Health Service Provider Channel:
The Network for a Healthy California – Latino Campaign seeks to establish partnerships with organizations that serve the FSNE-eligible Latino adults, their families and those who are interested in adopting the toolkit, as part of their health and nutrition education activities, and health promotion.
