How Mexican Blown Glassware is Made

Usually made from reclaimed, recycled bottles and scrapped glass, each piece of Mexican blown glassware is unique. Once the reclaimed glass is melted down, artisans then attach a blob of molten glass to the end of a long, hollow pipe. The artisan then uses his mouth and the power of his lungs to puff into the pipe, and blow the molten glass into the desired shape of a margarita glass, a pitcher, or perhaps a vase.

Every Piece of Mexican Glassware is Unique

Mexican handblown glassware is not for every customer. We often hear from customers that are dismayed that their Mexican stemware doesn't match, that the drinking glasses are differing heights, or that the colors have slight variations. Tiny imperfections, such as variable thickness and shape, bubbles and flowing colors are reminders that Mexican blown glass is made by humans. What some people see as a flaw, others see as a beautiful, handmade organic detail.

Even the weather plays a part in the crafting of Mexican handblown glass. Cold, rainy weather can cause the colored glass to cloud, and sometimes shatter.

Caring for your Mexican Blown Glassware

Because blown glassware is affected by heat, water and cold temperatures, many customers ask if it is safe to put their Mexican stemware in the dishwasher. Speaking from personal experience, I have been putting my Mexican blown glassware in the dishwasher for years, and I can promise that my mother, and grandmother have done the same.

My only observation is that since I have hard water, and the glassware is so durable, a film of calcium can build up after years of dishwashing. However, I do recommend hand washing blown glass pitchers, to protect their handles, and to better clean their steeply curved interiors.

Never serve hot liquids in Mexican glassware. Quick changes in temperature can cause the glassware to crack. Dishwashers build and lower temperature gradually, whereas rapidly filling a Mexican blown glassware pitcher with hot brewed tea will certainly result in a crack. Only fill your blown glassware with cold or room temperature liquids.

Blue Rim Mexican blown glassware is the most durable variety of Mexican glassware. With normal usage, pieces can last up to 20 years.

Mexican glassware does not bounce, so please refrain from dropping them! I have only replenished my shelf of Mexican glassware once in my 23 year marriage. Once my children got older, we seemed to have less glassware breakage.
