7/18/2011That whole Brazilian Keratin treatment thingFiled under: General @ 4:57 pm
Last month I tried an at-home Brazilian Keratin hair straightening treatment. I followed the directions on the box, washed my hair with the shampoo, towel dried it and applied the leave-in treatment, dried and straightened my hair. I kept it in for the required 48 hours. My hair felt all sticky and flat, not like it normally looks when I straighten it, because the leave-in conditioner weighed it down and made it look weird. Anyway the next time I washed my hair (with the required sulfate and sodium-free shampoo and conditioner) and “styled as usual”, my hair turned out extremely curly. Now, it was healthy, but not straight. The box didn’t say you have to keep straightening it, so I assumed style as usual means I can wash and go like I normally do, and let it air dry. Turns out that’s not the case. At home treatment: fail. At about the same time a friend of mine went and got her hair done at a salon. She did the 6 week treatment (it lasts 6 weeks, not the full 3 month treatment). I saw her a few weeks later and her hair was curly again. She said she was too lazy to keep up with the special shampoo and didn’t have time to straighten it. So basically, you pay hundreds of dollars for this treatment, and still need to straighten your hair every time you wash it? How does this seem worth it? They say it’s “easier” to straighten after the treatment, but to me I still have to dry it and straighten it, and that takes time. I want to wash and tie it back and go to sleep. So, why would I waste that much money if I would still need to take all that time? If I’m going to straighten my hair anyway, I can do it without the treatment that costs so much and seems to do so little. When people used to get their hair permed, they didn’t need to re-curl their hair after each wash. So why do people need to straighten each time? Professional straightening: Fail. When they come up with a way to make it last for realsies, someone should let me know. Popularity: 2% [?]

♥♥ Karie Super8 MovieFiled under: Entertainment @ 4:36 pm
Last weekend hubby and I went to watch the Super8 movie. I had seen some previews for it, but it was basically just the train crash scene. I didn’t know much about it and at a previous month’s book club when we moved on to talking about non-book stuff, we talked a little about this movie. I made the comment that what does a train crash have to do with the hotel and was laughingly told that Super8 is a type of camera. OH! Ok. Book club girls hadn’t seen it yet so we didn’t know too much about it. So hubby and I picked it since there didn’t seem to be any other interesting movies out. I would probably have to give the movie 2 stars. It started off really interesting, but then it just felt rushed and things were not explained well. I was constantly thinking “why” and “what just happened”? It’s a sci-fi alien movie, and you don’t find that out until much later in the story, which is fine because that’s part of the “ooh what’s going on in this town” feeling. The kids (whatever their ages are supposed to be, they were young looking) are making this movie for a film festival and while making the movie they catch the train crash on film. *Spoilers ahead* Later it turns out the train was carrying an alien and little cubes that build his spaceship out of metal. People start disappearing. The FBI is trying to cover this up and is trying to keep the local town police force out of the investigation (of the train crash, then the disappearances). Apparently this alien can tell you what it is feeling if it touches you. Turns out in the past, the science teacher worked for the government and learned that the alien just wants to go home. So now when he found out the FBI train was coming through his town, he crashed his truck into the train to let the alien escape. But the alien is pissed off at humans so it just destroys everything and kidnaps people to I think use as a food supply, and keeps them underground. Eventually the main character kid is grabbed by the alien and tells the alien “it’s ok you can go home” and so the alien steals all the metal and finishes building his ship and goes home. The missing people that he already ate, well, they’re gone. But the boy was able to save the girl. Ok. The End. There, now you don’t have to watch it. At the ending credits they show the movie the kids were trying to make. It’s a zombie short film and it actually was more interesting than the actual movie. Popularity: 1% [?]

♥♥ none yet 6/16/2011Aladdin’s is awesomeFiled under: Entertainment @ 8:52 pm
So this past weekend I went to one of my book clubs. This is the Creatures of Nyght book club – the awesome paranormal and scifi type books. You know, my fave. Anyway this time we had a suggestion to try a different restaurant, and we went to Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine in the Montrose area of Houston. Let me tell you, this is probably the most yummy place I’ve eaten at in a while. I was in lamb kabob heaven! If you don’t know, I love lamb, especially at Mediterranean restaurants. This was the best I’ve ever had! They had delicious sides, too. One side I ordered was ground beef and asparagus meatballs. Yummy! We also had a really nice private room for our book club. Not that we talked about the book. At all. Most of us didn’t read it. But the room was awesome. See the pics below. The only thing I didn’t like was the really bad parking lot. I stepped out of my car and into a huge pothole and twisted my foot. Bleh. Come on Houston get those pot holes fixed! Another thing I failed to mention (this should have been a post a month ago but eh, I fail at this) is that I met Charlaine Harris! I met her May 13th at Murder by the Book and got her autograph on the latest Sookie book. It was awesome to get to listen to her talk and answer questions. She’s probably one of the most famous people that come through Murder by the Book so it was great to get to meet her. Popularity: 3% [?]

♥♥ Mary 5/26/2011Another onsite assignmentFiled under: Entertainment,General,Work @ 11:00 am
I’ve been put on another 3 month on-site assignment at work. This time it’s full time (the previous one was 3 days a week). So I’m completely out of the office and away from all the office drama. It’s quite nice actually. Sure, I do still have to be responsive when I’m needed on my other active projects, but most of that work has been reassigned so that I could focus on the work here. This one is not downtown so no busing for me which means no extra reading time. Actually it’s not far from my office. It’s another oil and gas company and I’m working with compressor station permits. Since my commute is usually about 45 minutes, audio books have been a great replacement for the reading while on the bus experience I got a few months ago. I’m ahead of my goodreads schedule of reading my goal number of books (I set it to 50 books this year). I’ve also been reading some PDF books on the computer during my breaks, so that’s been nice. Of course, I read “real” books too at home. I haven’t read much on the kindle yet since most of the book club books I’ve ordered have been pre-kindle ownership so are in paperback or hardback. But I have read one of my PDF books on the kindle and that was nice. Very convenient having books with me everywhere I go. And also, these lovely freebies that Amazon has – delicious! I’ve “bought” probably 100 books by now that are $0.00 Popularity: 4% [?]

♥♥ none yet 5/10/2011Cali VisitFiled under: Entertainment,Family,Friends,Travel @ 3:51 pm
Last week hubby and I visited my parents in California. As much as he complains about visiting the left coast, we had a really nice visit. I got to see a lot of my family and even got to meet my new second cousin Nicole. We spent a day at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk with my parents and Grandma, and that was a great day. The weather was perfect and we got to play some fun games and enjoy the sunshine. We also went to Alcatraz with my parents, since they’ve never been but have lived in the area for 20+ years. It’s a really cool park museum with interesting history and amazing views of the SF Bay. I also got to visit some of my friends there, some of the few I still keep in contact with, so that was nice. It’s impossible to see everyone in a short timespan like that, especially when everyone is at work during the day. My Dad likes to recycle technology through me. He gave me an HTC phone that Mom didn’t like so now I’m using a phone that works and is on an awesome Andriod platform. Yea, my second Blackberry was dying. I can see why Mom turned this phone down – the touch screen is smaller than her phone and it is hard to click the right letters. I’m still struggling to type on it, but I’m getting better. Dad also gave us a camera Mom didn’t like because it was too heavy (one of those big lens cameras) for what she wanted to use it for. Dad also likes to go to Fry’s Electronics on his lunch break, and he found a really good laptop computer for $300! So now I have a computer that works My previous laptop was 6+ years old, so it was really really (really!) slow. So looks like I made out really good this visit haha. Popularity: 5% [?]

♥♥ Angelica. BK Walker 4/22/2011BirthdaynessFiled under: Entertainment,Friends,General @ 2:20 pm
So I believe you celebrate your birthday the entire month of your birthday. And so I’ve been celebrating this month I’m in my late 20s now. I guess that means I’m supposed to be more mature or something? We’ll see. Anyway here’s a quick recap of the stuff I’ve gotten for myself or hubby has gotten for me this month: The Saturday after my birthday my friend who’s birthday is the day before mine and I had a joint birthday BBQ at my house. We finally got to use the big yard for something. It was very nice, even though I got sick on my birthday. I love pot lucks cause people can really get creative with their meals, or be lazy and buy something, and both work out very well. It was a nice relaxing day. And I even got pressies from people – yay gift cards. The day before my birthday and on my friend’s birthday we had a double date dinner at Benihana with each of us getting our meals free. They also got us to take a photo with their hat and that was fun too. My birthday was on the 13th and yea it’s been a week and a half since my birthday, but I even celebrated today with a coupon for a free meal. Yay for birthdays. Like I said, you can celebrate all month long Popularity: 6% [?]
