“Rolling Stone and the Art of the Record Review,” an exhibition of over 80 original illustrations commissioned for the Record Review column of Rolling Stone magazine, will be on view in the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators from September 1–October 22, 2011. The art featured in this exhibit spans four decades representing music legends such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Tyler, Whitney Houston, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and many more. It has and continues to be Rolling Stone’sbelief that art is the best way to present new and legendary albums and their reviews to the world.
With help from Rolling Stone magazine Art Director, Joseph Hutchinson, and Senior Art Director, Steve Charny, the Society of Illustrators will exhibit album review art from some of the worlds most celebrated illustrators. Artists include Gary Baseman, Philip Burke, John Collier, Drew Friedman, Tomer Hanuka, Anita Kunz, Tim O’Brien and many more. These artists continue to highlight the history of the music industry. In addition, “Rolling Stone and the Art of the Record Review” will feature rock and roll memorabilia and ephemera on loan from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
In the very first edition of the magazine, Jann S. Wenner, founder and editor of the magazine, wrote that Rolling Stone “is not just about the music, but about the things and attitudes that music embraces.”
