The Goal Scorers Secret

Every hockey player loves to score! For newer players getting that first goal can be a real challenge, and for some experienced players they can get in slumps. Other players might find the back of the net the odd time, but then wonder why they can’t score more goals. In this video I am going to share a secret with you (as well as a few fun drills).

What All Good Goal Scorers do! (and why)

So how can you score more goals in hockey?

  1. Go to the net
  2. Tip pucks that come your way
  3. Hunt for rebounds, jump on them quickly!
  4. Shoot when you get in the high percentage scoring areas

I have been playing hockey for a long time, and I have a knack for scoring goals. Last season after a hatrick I was reflecting on my goals on the ride home. I soon realized none of the goals were because of any sort of skill. I didn’t have any bar-down snipes, or sweet dangles. Every single goal was a tap-in, or me shoveling the puck past the line. I got each goal because I went to the net! I realized that I still could have theย  hatrick that night without even knowing how to shoot the puck or stickhandle.

I love this article. I’ve been playing with amazing players in the past two or three years. Guys who could stickhandle around two of me in a phone booth. But still, I always managed to score twice their goal volume.

When asked why, I tend to say this; Brendan Gallagher (Montreal Canadiens) – Do you ever see him go through a D-man and snipe it bar down? Not really. It’s always 15-10 feets in, with his nose right in the net.

Well that what I like to do; Have my body within 10 feet of the goalie or less, whenever I can!

    Great article Jeremy!

I don’t score all the time, but earlier this year I got a hatty and found that all my goals were in front of the net

Sorry, but if Jonathan Quick is in net there is no high scoring area.

In all seriousness, thanks for all the great work, your articles are well written and you are an excellent teacher.
