Bio

Dr. Buxbaum has a longstanding interest in the cognitive neuropsychology of object, space, and body processing, and is a recognized expert in the study of action and apraxia. She received a BA in Biological Bases of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982 and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (with specialization in Neuropsychology) from Hahnemann University in 1988. She completed an NIH National Research Service Award Fellowship at Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute in 1994. 

She has served as an Associate Editor of the journals Cognition and Journal of Neuropsychology, a guest Editor of Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society and Cognitive Neuroscience, and is currently an Associate Editor of Cortex. She has also served as an invited panel member at numerous national and international meetings and as a member of scientific planning committees at the National Institute of Health. 

Her laboratory has received grant funding from the National Institute of Health, National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and the James S. McDonnell Foundation. She is the recipient of the Widener University Graduate Award for Excellence in Professional Psychology, the Maimonides Society Manuscript Award, and the Cohen Award from the Einstein Healthcare Network, and was invited to join the International Neuropsychological Symposium in 2015.

Research Interests

• The functional neuroanatomy and functional connectivity of the action system in the healthy and damaged brain
• Competition between actions as a source of action errors, and how such competition is modulated by cognitive control processes
• Expanding our understanding of “grounded cognition”: the dynamic role of action in object concepts as a function of context and task
• Plasticity of sensorimotor representations of body and space coding in the brain
• Relationships between the language system and skilled action system
