Women's liberation and socialism

spacer

From wage inequality and discrimination on the job to sexual harassment and the attack on reproductive rights, women's second-class status in society is far from being overcome. At the same time, however, a growing number of women and men are taking a stand against sexism and oppression, including activism against rape and slut-shaming. This page collects SocialistWorker.org's articles on the state of women's rights and the Marxist case for women's liberation.

Reproductive Rights

Comment: Rachel Cohen

Why we need abortion rights

The fact that self-induced abortions are on the rise because of increasing restrictions shows why women's lives depend on access to safe, legal abortions.

Our rights on the line in Texas

The battle lines in the struggle over a women's right to choose abortion run through the Texas state Capitol building--inside and outside.

Comment: Nicole Colson

21st century sterilization abuse

Sterilization abuses were committed against women prisoners in California until 2010, according to a shocking new exposé.

Comment: Rachel Cohen

The new Jane Crow

Hundreds of pregnant women have had their rights taken away by police, prosecutors and judges claiming the authority to control their bodies.

The Right-Wing Assault

Comment: Elizabeth Schulte

In defense of sex

The right wing has gone to war against birth control--precisely because it's central to a woman's right to make decisions about her sexual life.

Comment: Jen Roesch

The abstinence-only lie

Jamie Lynn Spears' statement that she was "shocked" she could become pregnant says a lot about the ignorance about sex forced on American teenagers.

Comment: Danny Katch

Triumph of the shrill

The anti-abortion right has somehow wandered into the mainstream of American politics. We need to escort them back where they belong.

Standing Up Against Rape

Comment: Jen Roesch

How the system excuses rape

Behind the horrifying facts about a gang rape in an Ohio town lies the reality that rape is widespread today--and society's institutions are responsible.

Comment: Rachel Cohen

Daisy Coleman is a hero

The teenage victim of a horrific rape in a Missouri town is bravely speaking out--and her words are having a national impact.

Analysis: Tithi Bhattacharya

In the streets against rape

The vicious gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student sparked angry, sustained protests in India and beyond.

U.S. Politics

Comment: Nicole Colson

Why the right wins the debate

Abortion is harder to obtain for many women today than several decades ago, and support for the right to choose has declined.

Comment: Leela Yellesetty

Abortion rights and elections

If we're going to "spend, spend, spend" for reproductive rights, let's spend that money on the people who actually need it.

Comment: Elizabeth Schulte

Is Obama the women's choice?

Supporters of women's rights deserve better than what Barack Obama has offered them for the last four years.

Marxism and Women's Liberation

Comment: Sharon Smith

Marxism and feminism

Marxists must not minimize the degree of oppression faced by women inside the working class, but rather make a serious effort on every front to combat it.

Comment: Jen Roesch

Can the working class unite?

For the working class to create a socialist society, it must achieve unity in its ranks--and that means championing all struggles against oppression.

Comment: Elizabeth Schulte

Socialism and liberation

A united working-class struggle that upends the current system of exploitation and oppression can bring about true liberation.

Women, capitalism and the family

Analysis: Tithi Bhattacharya

What is social reproduction?

Women are primarily responsible for labor in the sphere of reproduction--creating and sustaining the working class--at almost no cost to the system.

Ten socialist classics

Frederick Engels' Origin

Frederick Engels provides a materialist analysis of the rise of class society and, with it, the roots of women's oppression.

Comment: Tithi Bhattacharya

Marissa Mayer and the family

Capitalism depends on a strict division between the spheres of work, associated with men, and home, associated with women.

Class and Women's Oppression

Comment: Elizabeth Schulte

Why is it still 77 cents?

Equal pay for women should be treated like the urgently felt issue it is, not a talking point raised only during election seasons.

Comment: Jen Roesch

The single mother myth

Inequality is glaring and growing worse in U.S. society--and the New York Times has a handy scapegoat to explain it all: single mothers.

Comment

Another law for the rich

Rape charges have been dropped against Dominique Strauss-Kahn--an abject and infuriating example of how the justice system really works.

Comment: Elizabeth Schulte

Trickle-down feminism?

Will success in the corporate world for women like Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer mean success for all women?

Comment: Leela Yellesetty

The fight that won our rights

On the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, it's worth reflecting on how this landmark decision was won--and the lessons for today's battles.

Comment: Elizabeth Schulte

What came before Roe

The period before the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion provides lessons about how to shift the debate.

The Marxist Tradition

The role of women workers

A German socialist leader explained the key role working-class women must play in the fight for socialism and women's liberation.

Comment: Alexandra Kollontai

The women's question

In 1909, Russian revolutionary Alexandra Kollontai outlined the material basis for women's oppression, and how the working class can win liberation.
