Public Educational Programs

Saturday Cartooning Classes teach the fundamentals of cartooning — character design, the language of comics, and storytelling — through the use of various techniques and exercises in the media of comic books, comic strips, and animation. Classes are offered once a month on Saturday afternoons from 1 to 3pm. They are recommended for cartoonists from the ages of 8 to 14. Reservations are recommended as the class is filled on a first-come/first-served basis. Class size is limited to approximately 20 students per session. Check our Calendar for upcoming sessions. To register for a Saturday Cartooning Class please email education@cartoonart.org and include the student’s first and last name in your email and a contact number for their parent/guardian during the class.

Weekend Workshops focus on special topics and are taught by various cartoonists from around the San Francisco Bay Area. These include “How to Draw with Your Kid, How to Draw with Your Grownup” (by Betsy Streeter), Beginning/Intermediate Adult Classes, and other special topics. Saturday workshops vary in price and age range. Check our Calendar for upcoming workshops.

Advanced Master Classes provide rare opportunities to learn from professional cartoonists and animators who focus on an area of their own expertise. Topics range from character creation and story development to writing and drawing comic books and strips. These ongoing workshops for aspiring comic artists, writers, and fans of all ages are scheduled year-round at the museum [see schedule]. Costs vary. Check our Calendar for upcoming sessions.

Special Events for schools, after-school programs, and families, such as our Family Fun Day at Pixar Animation Studios, are announced as we schedule them. Don’t miss out! Sign up for our semi-monthly e-newsletter.

Long-Term Programs

Talking Points, an after-school program sponsored by the San Francisco Foundation, introduces high-school-aged youth to the principles of animation, cartooning, multimedia software, sound recording, and video production while producing animated and live-action video spots.  Placement priority is given to low-income students.  Some graduates move on to internships after completing at least 1 year of the program.

The Comic Book Project, based on a highly successful model initiated in New York City by Dr. Michael Bitz, is a hands on art program targeted at low-income students (Elementary and Middle School) where students learn to improve their literary skills through story writing, and to develop artistic skills through drawing, while also developing social skills and community engagement.   It allows students to express themselves through visual story telling and illustration, teaching them how to work as a team and how to express themselves through art and writing, providing them with tools for dealing with issues in a positive way.

Internships help the museum present an ambitious program of exhibitions, activities, and classes to the community and help create materials and services that would not otherwise exist. Interns also gain valuable experience in working with a prominent cultural institution and a chance to develop relationships with industry professionals. Learn More

Cartoon Boot Camp covers topics such as character creation, comic design and layout, and flipbook animation. It meets two hours daily for a week at a time in the summer months and during holidays. Designed for students ages 8 to 14. Learn More
