To be without history is to be without memory, to have no knowledge of who we are and how we came to be. The study of other people in different times and places develops our moral judgment and expands our understanding of what it is to be human.
Adelphi’s history department engages students in what is one of the most intellectual of pursuits. Our program requires history majors to become critical thinkers, perfect their skills in reading and writing, use their imagination to visualize past events and outcomes, and form strong opinions.
Graduates of Adelphi’s history program are prepared for graduate study in the discipline as well as the intellectual demands of many other professions, including law, education, journalism, civil service and business. Our students bring to their careers highly valued abilities in research and writing as well as a sophisticated knowledge of world affairs.
The Department of History offers the following programs:
History majors can also enter the Scholar Teacher Education Program in the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education.
