The Odd Portrait
Posted in alchemy, craft, fashion, jewelry with tags alchemy, craft, fashion, jewelry on November 24, 2015 by shewalkssoftlyI just received a very special custom piece from The Odd Portrait: a wrist cuff engraved with a phrase that holds deep meaning for me.
Solve et Coagula is Latin for “dissolve and rebuild.” It is an ancient term that represents complete alchemical transformation, mind body and spirit. After spending 20 years increasingly occupying beds and hospitals with misdiagnosed health issues, a couple of months ago I was finally diagnosed with a genetic immune disorder for which the treatment involves injecting a substance to break down my own tissue and following it with a substance to rebuild my immune system. It is literally a process of Solve et Coagula! But the emotional, mental and spiritual alchemy of this illness has been far more striking. I now have a beautiful reminder (which I’ll wear to treatment!) when I have trouble motivating myself to keep shooting for recovery.
As for the other designs you’ll find on the site, influences include “80’s punk and glam to 90’s grunge and rock n roll. Outdoor music festivals, urban graffiti art, and post apocalyptic dystopian movies.” I love the spirit and independence of this shop!
rock n roll spiked leather fashion
The Odd Portrait was founded when the creators got tired of selling factory made jewelry with huge seller fees and limited creativity. They went their own way, and now every piece is handmade and unique! No two are ever exactly the same. My kind of rebels.

Atelier Iwakiri: Creature Bags
Posted in accessories, craft, creatures, fashion, sea with tags accessories, craft, creatures, fashion, sea on November 13, 2015 by shewalkssoftlyI don’t understand a word of the text, but I just browsed the entire collection of handmade creature bags by Atelier Iwakiri.
Such excellent attention to detail on scales, shells and skins!
These could be wonderful conversation pieces for the shy and/or introverted to carry around (yes, my mind went there because I am terrible at initiating conversation with strangers. But once I begin talking, I’m fine).

THE Cat Dress
Posted in craft, creatures, fashion with tags craft, creatures, fashion on June 23, 2015 by shewalkssoftlyWhy do I call it THE Cat Dress? Because once you’ve seen it, all other cat dresses don’t seem quite catty enough.
Some fine craftsmanship, eh? This stunner debuted at CatCon LA (Yes, that’s a thing. No, I haven’t gone. Yes, I absolutely would.)

X-Presion Pixelated Hair
Posted in body decoration, fashion, geek, hair with tags body decoration, fashion, geek, hair on February 20, 2015 by shewalkssoftlyX-Presion, a unique, cutting edge hair studio, recently debuted a coloring technique that mimics colored pixels.
At this stage in my life, I doubt I’d ever be daring enough to do such a thing (and it might look a bit less striking on blondes).
Side note: back in college I had jet black hair, and when I went to a professional salon to restore my normal color, I ended up with something similar to this…and by “similar” I mean every color between blonde and black in splotches with no particular pattern. It looked like I’d lost a bet or fallen victim to a seriously awful prank. I wish I’d taken a picture.
Would you try this?

Coline Design: Text Tights
Posted in clothing, fashion, geek, wish list with tags clothing, fashion, geek, wish list on January 15, 2015 by shewalkssoftlyI definitely want to get my hands on some Text Printed Tights.
Coline Design makes a variety of colorful tights with famous literary quotes (from the likes of William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Lewis Caroll). OR, and I love this option, you can order custom text.
You will also find a number of different fonts and styles. I’m such a sentimental fool; I’d probably love to get a pair with memorable words from a loved one.
What quote would you emblazon on your legwear?

I Don’t Get Fashion: 1970’s His N’ Hers
Posted in absurd, advertising, clothing, fashion, humor, retro, vintage with tags absurd, advertising, clothing, fashion, humor, retro, vintage on November 7, 2014 by shewalkssoftlyI was only alive for mere months of the 70’s, so I did not have the benefit (detriment?) of seeing these fashions arise and fade organically with the changing times. It’s basically a given that anything worn in one time period will be reviled in another (then worn ironically by hipsters). But…was couples dressing really a thing?
This is, as far as I can tell, an actual catalog item, not a Roman Tarzan Baby Wrestling Champion costume.
I feel like the outfits on the left are what 70’s superheroes wore on their days off, if not too concerned with safeguarding a secret identity.
Did no one involved in this entire photoshoot notice that something is missing here? This is not how one leaves leaves the house for (presumably, by the background image) a boat ride.
“We’re soulmates. We finish each other’s sen…sible mint green mini dress sweaters.”
This is what happens when you overshoot the mark after practicing your Catalog Faces too hard.

Posted in clothing, fashion, wish list with tags clothing, fashion, wish list on September 5, 2014 by shewalkssoftlyI am in love with Roza Khamitova’s wing inspired scarves!
There’s something gorgeously empowering about donning some silky, flowing, large wings.
Absolutely stunning! I’ll be adding one of these to my wish list.
