I'm a digital editor and writer with a love of travel, culture and the outdoors. I recently served as deputy travel editor of BBC.com, the global news site seen by more than 60 million readers every month. There, I assigned and edited stories from around the globe, conceived and launched columns, and built features like this.
Before that, I was the editor-in-chief of SKYE – an AOL site with millions of monthly readers. My team and I launched the digital property covering travel, space, health, adventure and breaking weather news. I oversaw the development of videos such as Above the Blue Marble: Hurricane Sandy from Space, and I assigned and edited essays and longform stories, including Chasing Alexander Supertramp about the pilgrims who risk their lives to reach the "Into the Wild" bus.
Prior to that, I co-founded and co-edited the online travel magazine World Hum, leading it through acquisition by Travel Channel. The site won the gold Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers for best internet travel site, and in 2010, it was named a Webby Honoree in the writing category along with NPR and Vanity Fair. More than a dozen of its stories have appeared in The Best American Travel Writing anthology.
My own writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Outside, Men’s Journal, National Geographic Adventure, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles magazine and the Boston Globe. For stories, I’ve attended bullfighting school, reported from Fiji during a coup, raced Aston Martins on ice, and hung out with the writers of The Onion. My essay Lust in Translation was shortlisted in The Best American Travel Writing, and other stories, including pieces on Tijuana and Thailand, have appeared in anthologies from Lonely Planet and Travelers' Tales. I teach at the annual Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference, and I’ve taught travel writing at UCLA and UC San Diego Extension.
I began my journalism career as a reporter at the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register. I live in Los Angeles, where I'm working on a few projects, including a novel about travel, love and globalization.
