Geoff Johns and Gary Frank Teaming for 'Shazam!' Backups in 'Justice League' [NYCC 2011]

The Big Red Cheese's "New 52" flavor is set to be revealed in the near future in "The Curse of Shazam!," an upcoming series of Justice League backup stories from creators Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. DC's The Source blog doesn't report any specific info regarding which issue the backup will start in, how many issues it will run, whether it's in a standalone or shared-universe continuity, or preview art by Frank just yet, but it's still encouraging news for fans who may have feared the worst for the hero.

Marvel concluded its Cup O' Panel at New York Comic Con with a characteristically ominous image that hinted strongly at an incoming story that should delight some X-Men fans: that of the Phoenix. Updated: The teaser image feature the words "It's coming" over a fiery Phoenix force manifestation, and listed the last names of a long series of A-List Marvel creators: Bendis, Brubaker, Coipel, Fraction, Hickman, Kubert, and Romita Jr.

Everyone knows that death is never permanent in superhero comics, but even this is a surprise. Despite being graphically decapitated in the conclusion of 2003's Wolverine: Evolution, the X-Man's longtime nemesis Sabertooth will return to the land of living in a future story by Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi, the creators who took him out in the first place. The news was dropped at Marvel Comics' Cup 'O Joe panel at New York Comic Con, where Loeb said that a backdoor was left ajar in the pages of Evolution. "The story we told was not the whole story," he told the packed hall. "We did leave breadcrumbs along the way."

Sabertooth will return sometime in 2012.

Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3's Chris Baker, Francis Mao, Miguel Corty, Riota Niitsuma and Seth Killian revealed some new details about the fighting game today at both the Marvel Interactive: Marvel Video Games and UMVC3 panels. There were some nice reveals, including a first look at aesthetically reworked maps based on a Marvel-heavy nighttime New York City and Metro City modeled after Marvel's "Days of Future Past" storyline, plus images of some of Spider-Man's alternate costumes. The real kickers, though? Players will have access to a special ability-enhanced "Heroes vs. Heralds" mode. Also, Galactus is now a full-fledged playable character in arcade mode. Check out more details after the jump.

Cartoon Network debuted several minutes of footage from the upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series at San Diego Comic-Con International this past summer, which briefly introduced Hal Jordan, Kilowog, their space ship The Interceptor's artificial intelligence Aya and a host of Red Lanterns as the groups clashed on the frontier of The Guardian's established space sectors. This weekend at New York Comic Con 2011, CN gave fans a much fuller look at the series by showing the entire pilot episode and giving fans access to executive producer and DC animation icon Bruce Timm, whose signature style was adapted into CG-animated 3D for the first time for the series.

Check out our initial (potentially spoilery) impressions of the sneak peek airing on CN November 11, along with Timm's comments and answers to fan questions after the jump.

As revealed by a banner at New York Comic-Con, Activision and Beenox will once again team up, this time for an adaptation of the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man film to be released summer, 2012. This isn't Beenox's first Spidey outing of course, with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and its newly-released sequel Spider-Man: Edge of Time both still on store shelves. What's most surprising is that, rather than solely serving up teaser images or super short cinematics at this afternoon's Marvel Interactive: Marvel Video Games panel, Activision chose to give fans a look at about a minute of what appears to be actual game footage. What's that we see? Free-roaming gameplay and Spider-Man fighting a giant robot thing? Positive signs! Check out the video after the jump.
