DVLA Personalised Registrations (Private Plates)
Number Plates
Although the term number plates is the most common term used for what we sell, it
is not actually the correct definition of our main product. A number plate is
actually the piece of perspex or plastic fitted on the front and rear of your
car bearing the registration mark of your vehicle. The current font used for UK
car registration plates is the Charles Wright font, you may see personalised registration plates with other
fonts but they are not legal for UK road use. You may see many plates on
vehicles showing the EU band or logo, this is not compulsory within the UK.
Motorists without the EU logo may use their National Emblem - England using the
English flag, Scottish with Scotland flag and the Welsh with the flag of Wales .

Private Number Plates ('private plates')
This is basically our previously issued car reg section, when referring to "private registration plates" or private plates we tend to
refer to dateless car number plates, sometimes called 'cherished registrations' (search top left). Private plates are personalised plates but they are there for all to see! Remember private plates or cherished number plates are often a very good financial investment.

DVLA - DVLA Number Plates Or DVLA Registrations
The DVLA is the organisation of UK Government responsible for maintaining a
database of drivers and a database of vehicles in Great Britain; its counterpart
in Northern Ireland is the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) for Irish number
plates. The DVLA issues
driving licenses, organises collection of vehicle excise duty (also known as
road tax and road fund license) and sells "cherished numbers" (private number
plates). The DVLA started selling personalised registrations in the late
eighties holding high value auctions at Christies and Bonhams selling numbers
like 1J, 1A, K1 NGS (240,000). The most expensive number sold at a DVLA
personalised registrations auction is 51 NGH which raised 245,000 whistle S1
NGH "only" made 86,000 during a similar auction in 1998 Since then DVLA have
played a major role within the personlaised registrations industry releasing

About DVLA Registrations And Different Variants
Car number plates were first used and issued by the UK Government in 1903 to identify the increasing amount of vehicles used on the UK roads. The first car reg plate issued was "A1" which later became the most sought after number plate in the UK! Within the United Kingdom there are two numbering and registration systems, one for Northern Ireland for Irish number plates which is administered by the DVA and one for Great Britain which is administered by the DVLA (The Driver And Vehicle Licensing Agency). An example of a current Irish number plate would be TUI 3456 and an example of a current GB registration plate would be JB11 JBW - Both examples are also saleable!
UK DVLA Registrations can be square or oblong but must be black lettering on a white back ground for the front number plate and black lettering on yellow for the rear plate. Motorists are allowed to show there national emblem flag on the actual plate. Silver letters on a black back ground are and were used on vehicles first registered before 1968. The letter "I" is only used for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland. The Channel Islands and the Isle Of Man are outside of the EU and the United Kingdom so they use a different system and plates are not transferable to the mainland. Trade plates are valid within the UK for motor traders use for untaxed or unregistered vehicles.
It is thought that the most expensive private plate sold to date is "S 1" which was sold by Bonhams Auctions in September 2008 for 397,000 - Carreg.co.uk were the under bidders! Since then, many other numbers have also made "big money" M1 made 330,000 at a Goodwood auction and car designer Afzal Khan paid 375,000 for F 1. It seems single letters with single numbers on car number plates are the ultimate!
We are always surprised with the amount of interest which some numbers gain, DVLA hold around 7 auctions per year and sell numbers like THE 571G for around 8,000! (only good is miss spaced to THE STIG). Other private number plates sold by DVLA via auction were AKB 44R (AKBAR) - FAB 16N (FABIEN) - CHR 155P (CHRIS SP) - CLA 770N (CLAPTON) - DAV 15W - (DAVIS W) even though the DVLA will fine you and confiscate the number plate IF you miss pace the numbers/letters! Why do they hold this type of number plate back and sell via auction? Maybe they should have "We will sell you this but you can not use it" on their next promotional advert?
