Hearts of Iron 3 : For the Motherland review

For the Motherland is a wonderful addition to excellent game! It increases the immersion and detailed feel of the game and it also makes the game feel more like World War II than some generic wargame. This expansion is further proof that Paradox stands with its products and keeps on improving them. I highly recommend this expansion for anyone that enjoys Heats of Iron III.

I loved the new interface and lines that helped you see where the HQ's were linked and it really helped in Sempre Fi. For the Motherland also has some amazing new little things that just make the game better. The new partisan function really did it for me. There was something missing as partisans were something you never really ever saw before. Now you can play as Poland and have fun even if you do lose.

Really a must have buy for HOI 3 players. I'm totally and completely satisfied.

I have been waiting for a sale to buy this expansion and at a 66% discount now was the time.As stated by others below it brings some interesting new features and improvements that make the OG HOI3 game and Semper Fi expansion come together. If like me you enjoyed the additions of semper fi but still felt something was missing For the Motherland may be that something.FTM expansion is also a must for anyone looking to keep the HOI3 experience going as it is the only version that is still getting patches.

An excellent addition to HOI3. The much needed war goals system is a great idea for the game and the coup system makes the game for dynamic. And must buy for any HOI fan.

I waited until the 2.05 patch, but for anyone except the casual HOI3 player, FTM is a must. Reasons, as probably stated above:

1. It's the only version that will continue to be supported with patches.

2. It's the only version that most modders will continue to support

3. It scrolls and plays as smooth as glass based on my limited experience so far.

4. The included battle scenarios are an HOI3 first and are actually worth playing. In fact, they are a good intro into the game system, as all you have to worry about is the military.

With SF/FTM HOI3 is slowly becoming what it should of been on release! The latest patch provides a vastly improved experience, but there are still significant flaws with the AI system (covered in depth below, so I'll not repeat them) and numerous random CTD.

That said, it's a great way to kill a day or two - even better if you can smash a few friends on the way.

Poor add on. The supply system is a joke. Playing Germany my units are constantly running out of suppy whereas the allies seem to run on air. The inability to control allies make the game unplayable as there all ignore your requests. RAF fighter are undefeatable, in 1940 RAF fighters are over the borders of Germany blowing me out of the sky. The AI also has a fixation with amphibious invasions with the Germany coast contantly being invaded and having this ability to survive with no supplies and despite being defeated reappear for no apparent loss.

Another great expansion pack for Hearts of Iron 3

The most important improvement of this expansion over the original is possibly the performance increase. Where as the original HoI3 was slow in many computers, with FTM I'm able to play at blazing fast speeds even in my laptop computer.

Many new features make this a essential addon to any HoI3 player. Improves the game a lot over the original HoI3 and the Semper Fi Expansion.

Hearts of Iron 3 : For the Motherland review

The game is an interesting version and I enjoyed the variety. That being said. The Allied AI shows a distressing tendency to overcommit in 1939/40. During the Lowlands campaign. The Allies always invade the North German Plains or Denmark. This results in the complete loss of the "BEF" and almost as frequently 1-2 South African armor units. Various other nations(normally India or Canada) will then invade by themselves resulting in additional allied losses at a time they can ill afford it. The normal result of this is that Italy can run amok in the Mediterranean area and that Egypt/Suez canal is very vulnerable.

The other noticeable issue is the stripping of the UK garrison force. Frequently there is no more than two full strength units and 4-6 garrison bde's on hand. This makes the UK easily vulnerable to a German invasion of Mediocre strength.

When the Allies have overcomitted the Game will normally be over by late 1941. The Germans really have no reason for an invasion of Russia. They can easily neutralize the Allies and leave just America as a factor by mid 1941.

The Strategic materials is a great idea and well worth examining.

absolutely unmissable expansion for HoI3 if you love this game, new resources system benefically affects all the game... influence on other countries, expansion, defence. good one.

once again a welldone expansion work from PI

Hearts of Iron 3 : For the Motherland review

This expansion greatly improves the AI for HOI3. It allows a more detailed control of theater behavior. It also adds several ease-of-use improvements, such as the "dismiss all" button for leaders -- a boon to players who don't want to hunt around Germany to find Guderian et al. The main disadvantage, with any HOI expansion, is the downtime for your favorite mod to catch up. If you are addicted to DICE, keep a watch on its forum before buying the expansion. (Black ICE, by the way, already has a compatible version, but without most of the ICE equipment. August Storm has kept pace, and includes a very aggressive Japanese AI that uses -- gasp! -- CAS missions by carrier air groups.) In the end, if you play HOI3, you must have this expansion.

Unrealistic scenarios and bug-rich game

With ftm rebasing flight units makes them to loose most of their organization.

French/RAF air force are reducing ground units organization to zero in two bombing runs, while trying to do the opposit with much more advanced technology achieves almost nothing.

It is impossible to completely destroy enemy air units on the ground (bombing for a year is not enough). Even when all their resources, infrastructure, airbase completely destroyed their air units keep recovering during constant bombardment.

Panthers or King Tigers with 150mm armour and with advanced mechanized infantry cannot beat a single french infantry unit on flat terrain.

Enemy submarines are almost completely immune to any kind of attempt to engage them (sortie, patrol, intercept).

Naval strike almost never results in engagement between bomber and surface units.

And so on, and so on ...

All in all I have never seen such a badly made product like the semper fi and the ftm.

I installed the first one for three times and I had to unistall it always because it rendered the game totally unenjoyable.

But the worst is the experience what Paradox calls 'Tech Support'. Everyone can decide it for himself whether he would like to get an answer for the above inquiry like I did as this:

Veklmaarschalk (moderator on the Paradox forum site - the only 'support' provided by them)

"Well to bad you don't like the game, but none of your issue's has anything to do with tech-support, so thread closed."

It is basically let's say complaining about a basketball that is not bouncing back from the floor and having a response from the maker or vendor that 'it's too bad, why do not you just play soccer with it or simply buy another one'.

This kind of arrogance is just over the top by my opinion. This clearly shows that selling crap for naive and basically helpless young kids makes no problem for many people for the profit.

As a father myself I do not recommend this product to anyone looking for quality games!
