Outlook 2011 for Mac to render HTML email via Webkit?

Posted by Mathew Patterson on October 26, 2010 in Email Client News

Some very exciting news via the blog at 9to5mac.com: ”Outlook 2011 uses Webkit to render HTML”. We don’t have much detail at this point, but Seth Weintraub reports that a Microsoft employee revealed:

“that instead of using the Word HTML rendering that previous versions of Mac Office used (and the PC version as well), Microsoft has moved over to Apple’s Webkit rendering engine to render HTML mails.  Outlook 2011 also uses WebKit to create HTML mail.”

We don’t have any official confirmation at this stage, so don’t go throwing out your <tables> yet. If this pans out, it would be a huge step forward for Microsoft, even if it turns out to be a Mac only change. Using Webkit to both create and render emails works around Microsoft’s main reason for sticking with the Word renderer, which was consistency of display for their customers using MS tools.

Perhaps that FixOutlook.org poster caught someone’s eye!  We look forward to bringing you updates as we dig in and see if this is for real. If it is, a big round of applause, and thanks to whoever was responsible.

Too bad it’s only foretasted for Mac and not (yet) Windows, where most Outlook users likely are. Still, great news if it’s true!

I’ve been using Outlook 2011 for about a week, and have it configured to convert everything to plain text when I reply.  Works as expected, except that it wraps lines at odd and random-seeming places.

J.D. can you confirm that Outlook 2011 for Mac does indeed use WebKit to render emails? I hope so, this would be a huge improvement.

I know Outlook for Windows based computers still uses Trident to render HTML. Since Trident is the rendering engine for Internet Explorer this is unlikely to ever change.

Only mention I can find is a comment in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Outlook.app/Contents/Resources/printing.events.table.css:

thead {
/* Not currently supported by WebKit. This is meant to indicate that the
* header should print at the top of every page that the table spans. */
table-header-group;
}

A great piece of news in the field of emailing market. We will have to wait and see how this can be incorporated into the operating system. Novell has done a great job in building this product.

have been using outlook ‘11 since a beta a few months ago, now on the official release and am pretty pleased with it so far. One question though, does anyone know how to get rid of the second line of information in the messages pane? in the picture above, first message “Gifts for your mom...”. it’s taking up unnecessary space and I can’t find anywhere in the settings to turn this off!

Would be truly remarkable if Microsoft would finally admit and use a better product form Mac.
