Does the iPad 2 Have the Gaming Potential to Beat the Wii U?
By Joel Falconer on June 13th, 2011
The iPad 2 has great gaming potential, and in the past week we’ve seen Apple announce full HDTV mirroring for the device, and Nintendo announce a console that comes with a touchscreen controller, the Wii U.
Since then, we’ve already seen iOS developers jump on the opportunities that mirroring presents. While the technology provided by Apple is mainly there to display a copy of what’s on your iPad screen on your television, the developers behind Real Racing 2 are planning an iPad 2 version that’ll show racing telemetry on the iPad screen, and the traditional car view on the TV itself.
There are obviously areas where the iPad 2 falls behind the Wii for pure gaming purposes, but the gap is being closed fast. And since people are buying iPads en masse for other purposes anyway, will it just be more convenient for consumers to spend $100 on an Apple TV to support mirroring than buying yet another console?
The tablet-style Wii U controller doesn’t play well with others — you will only be able to use one of them per console. But I’m sure enterprising iOS developers will be able to figure out innovative ways to take part in multi-iPad gameplay over WiFi in the living room.

Hello! I have an iPad and I mainly use the gizmo to play games and teach the children which I tutor every Saturdays.
