Vegan Becomes Obsessed With Juicing

February 24, 2011 by Keri Tweet

If this was a newspaper about my life, that would be the headline of the day. In the past 24 hours I’ve juiced everything green I could get my hands on. I mean, really only the green contents of my refrigerator, but that was a kale, purple kale, rainbow chard, and arugula. My first juice, last night, was a bunch of kale, 2 carrots, and an apple. This morning I used purple kale, one big leaf of rainbow chard, and two carrots, and tonight I juiced the remainder of the rainbow chard, a little arugula, 2 carrots, and a pear. The kale juices are definitely my favorite, but since I know a wide variety of greens is best, I’ll keep mixing it up.

The best part is I’ve already found I truly enjoy juicing. I enjoy picking the ingredients, carefully washing and prepping them, drinking the juice (of course), and even cleaning up the juicer. There’s something very satisfying about the whole process! If you’re wondering which juicer I chose, I went with the Omega VRT 350HD. I currently have limited counter space, so the small footprint is just fabulous. Another reason I went with this model is because while I juice almost entirely greens, I wanted to have a machine that could handle most anything. It saddens me a little to say, but the husband won’t so much as taste my green juice, so with this model it can handle something different for him. I know I’ve only been using it 24 hours, but I’m just in love! It’s so, so easy to use and clean. I dread using appliances that are difficult to clean, but this thing is a snap and somehow almost fun to clean. So far I would recommend this juicer a million times over, but I’ll definitely keep you updated on my thoughts.

Now all I need is one of those nifty glass straws to drink my plethora of juice with and I’ll be all set! If you have favorite ingredient combinations for juice, please, please, please share them with me. I’d love to try your favorites. Any juicing tips and tricks for this juicing newb are also much appreciated!

I want one of those glass straws, too! I keep hoping that Glass Dharma will contact me for a giveaway or product review or something so I can get some straws for free & won’t have to shell out the money. Haha! (Don’t judge me for being cheap – *ahem* – I mean “frugal.”) spacer

That juicer looks super awesome! I have an Omega 8005, so while I can’t speak to your particular model, I am SO HAPPY with the Omega brand. I’m in love with my juicer & obsessed with juicing, too! spacer So happy you’re enjoying it!

Oh, and this is pretty much my standard/favorite juice recipe: rawepicurean.net/2008/08/19/gorgeous-green-juice-tonic/

Sometimes I experiment with other recipes, but this has become old faithful for me. spacer I love to add kale or collard greens stems, sometimes a little ginger, sometimes a carrot (though that muddles the gorgeous green color), etc. Experimenting with different flavor combos is so fun!

I’m so glad I went with Omega! I like “frugal”! spacer
I just picked up ginger today to try in juice. The girl checking me out was like, “What do you do with this?!” Haha!

I’m cuckoo for juicing! My favorite is: granny smith apple, romaine lettuce, celery, kale stems, cucumber, fennel, ginger (1 inch) and juice of one lime. Delicious!

I can’t wait to try adding some ginger! For some reason, I don’t like apples in juice/smoothies. I keep trying, but it’s so sweet! I need to try adding some lemon or lime. Thank you for the “recipe”!

It’s funny I found your post now, because I just started a juice fast 2 days ago and I am also in love with green juice!
One of the combos I love is fennel (With greens), lemon juice, grapefruit juice or mandarin, apple juice, spinach-for extra green-mint and ginger.

I have found that adding lemon to green juice always helps with the green flavor. I will post recipes for juice on my blog soon so check it out!

I also love beet juice, although not green, it’s amazing!

I looove juicing! There’s something so satisfying about drinking a nice big mason jar full of it after a workout…
My favorite combo is: 1 apple, 2 carrots, 5 stalks celery, 1/2 bunch curly parsley, 1/2 inch knob of ginger, 1 cucumber, and at least 5 leaves of kale (if not more!). Sometimes I throw a head of romaine in there too.

I agree. I can’t wait to cool off with green juice in the summer, too! I tried adding a piece of ginger to my favorite juice and WOAH was it strong! I’ve had an aversion to ginger ever since!
