How Bloggers and Content Marketers Can Generate Unlimited Video Ideas

in Videos

spacer As promised, this year I will be introducing some guest bloggers who I have asked to contribute some of their own special talents over here at my place.  For my first guest blog post of the year, I would like to introduce to you Mr. Paul Wolfe.  You can read more about Paul after this awesome post but let’s not tie this up any longer…

Today’s video tutorial came about because Adrienne asked me if I could help her with something that she was having some problems with.  And that something was this:

“How do I come up with ideas for videos?”

Now before we go and look at three ways that you cannot only come up with ideas for videos, but come up with limitless ideas, I just briefly want to talk for a moment about why it’s vitally important to come up with video ideas.

And not just topic ideas – but ideas that will resonate with your audience and more importantly, attract new members to your ideas.

The Importance Of Consistency In Video Marketing

The biggest reason why you should create multiple videos – and consistent posting schedule – can be found on Page 15 in the YouTube Creators Playbook. In their own words, Youtube says:

Strategy: Release content frequently and on a recurring schedule.

Why This Works: Frequency of uploads affects the algorithm. To build an audience, ‘a consistent audience requires consistent content.’”

I put the important sentence in italics:

Frequency of uploads affects the algorithm.

Now YouTube is not the only way to use videos in your video marketing efforts – but it’s a big part of any video marketing strategy. And if YouTube themselves tell us that we need to create frequent videos….well, we’d be pretty dumb to ignore that.

Plus there are plenty of other benefits to creating multiple videos too:

  • the more content you have, the more chances there are for people to find you (Marcus Sheridan calls this ‘The Law Of Compound Information)
  • greater exposure to your expertise increases your authority; the more videos you have optimized correctly, each video can appear in Google’s Search Engine results not just in YouTubes
  • the more overall views you have, the higher your channel will be ranked. This positively affects how Google and YouTube return your videos in search results
  • videos are easily shared…leading to greater exposure of your brand and authority

But the biggest benefit of creating a consistent posting schedule is this:

In most niches very few people are doing it yet. So getting started NOW will give you a market advantage over your competitors.

Video Is Only Getting Bigger…And Bigger

Video is not going away. As mobile devices spread – and internet access gets cheaper and faster – the importance of video is going to grow. Cisco Systems estimate that by the end of 2013 around 90% of web traffic will be generated via video.

So in my opinion you’ve got to get started with video. And you’ve got to be thinking about a publishing schedule for videos in the same way that you have a publishing schedule for your blog.

And to commit to a regular publishing schedule for videos requires that you can conceive of multiple topic ideas to make videos about.

And that leads us to the Video Tutorial itself:

So what did you think?  Paul and I would love to hear your thoughts on what he shared and please feel free to ask any questions because Paul will be by to answer those for you.

Now remember, video is something you are really going to need to implement into your marketing starting this year so while we have Paul’s undivided attention, let’s be sure and take advantage of it.  If you have any questions at all, now’s the time to ask.

Thank you all for taking the time to stop by today and I want to especially thank Paul for helping not only me out with the question I had for him but hopefully he was able to shed some light on this for you as well.

This year he will be focusing on video and video marketing… Paul also teaches bass guitar online and is just about to pass 2 million views on YouTube.

Some nice points here and of course video is going to explode. I only wonder why it is isn’t used more on blogs yet – although I always like to read my info personally. You Tube has even set the precedent by changing their own format to accommodate this. Useful post.

Hey Pea

My gut feeling why more people are not using video is that most people are overwhelmed by the challenge of video. IT has so many moving parts – camera, lighting, microphones, importing, editing, rendering, uploading, etc etc – and that’s WITHOUT any content being created! (or thinking about clothes or make up!).

Here’s the biggest reason IMO why everyone should be doing it: if you don’t, and your competitor does, then in a couple of years time you are screwed. You have chosen to restrict yourself to a dwindling market share in your particular niche. And your competitors will get farther and farther ahead.

Do you know of any business in the world that doesn’t use email? In 5 years time your potential clients will look at you the way we would look at someone who doesn’t use email now if you’re not using video. That’s why it’s so important to get started now.

Thanks for dropping by.

Hey Pea,

Great to see you again.

I think a lot of people are still nervous about doing videos which is why more blog posts don’t have video. Would probably have to research that further but I’m sure that has a lot to do with it. I hope they’ll get over that tho if the predictions are right. Don’t implement video into your marketing and you just may regret that decision.

Thanks for the comment and great to see you again. Have a wonderful week.

I want to agree with you Adrienne. Personally this is the top reason why, even when I planned to do more of videos some time ago, I have not really brought myself to doing any. I must appreciate Paul for this video. It has helped in taking care of one of my concerns. And thanks to you also for bringing Paul to this.

Glad you found this one helpful Chadrack and I hope we’ll start seeing some videos from you soon. Paul’s made it pretty easy for us and he’s also given some links in the comments on what programs to use if you need any help. I’m still going with the basics for now but they are working great!

Hey Carolyn

If you’ve already started video then you’re ahead of the curve! My advice to you is this: commit to a regular schedule and each month pick an element (like lighting, audio quality, backdrop, or something) and try and improve in that area.

In a year’s time your videos will be much better than they are now – and more importantly, much better than the bulk of your competitors.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Carolyn,

Ah, was so happy he wanted to do this for me and answer that big question I had for how to get ideas to create more videos. I mean people want to see them but coming up with those topics can be hard at times. He really went into depth showing me how to resolve this so I now have no excuses. He called me out didn’t he!

Glad you enjoyed this one so I guess that means you’ll have to start doing more too Carolyn. And by the way, Happy Birthday to your blog. I’ll be by here in a bit but congratulations for being online for one full year. Whoohooo!!!

See ya later Carolyn!

Adrienne: Great way to start off 2012!!

I must admit; like many people, I don’t feel comfortable doing videos but I know it’s important for me to “suck it up” and just do it!!

Thanks for bringing Paul on as a guest and I’m looking forward to utilizing his (and your) help.

Diane

Thanks for stopping by – please see the reply I left above to Pea (first comment). That should make it clear why it’s absolutely crucial to start doing ‘video.’ (And note that even though I am quite comfortable with ‘live action’ shoots, this was all done with slideshow and microphone. There are many ways to skin a cat!).

Hey Diane,

Been there and done that Diane. Once you move through the fear of doing them you’ll kick yourself for not having started sooner. Trust me, I SO know how you feel. But look at me now! People tell me I’m a natural but I sure wasn’t in the beginning. So, suck it up and get with it girl. You can do this and people love videos.

So glad you enjoyed this post and what Paul had to share. He’s a video rock star as far as I’m concerned. No more excuses right!

Thanks Diane! I appreciate you sharing that. We’ll help you through this, no worries.

Hey Adrienne,

Thanks for this post. You know I love video to market ideas and connect with an audience. Paul great tips and advice. Question for you…what do you think of Vimeo? I understand the traffic benefits of YouTube but I really like Vimeo. Interested in your thoughts.

Hi Aisha

Although YouTube truly IS the Daddy of video marketing, I do believe that there are other video aggregator sites worth testing out and posting videos to. Vimeo is one. Blip.tv is another. Metacafe and Veoh are both ok as well.

What I really suggest is trying it out and tracking where subscribers and/or clients are coming from. That’s the ultimate determinant as to whether is something is worth taking the time to persue.

Paul is the man! Adrienne, thanks for getting Paul to guest post about one of his many areas of expertise.

Paul, I like your ideas on how to get ideas for videos. I’ve used your Amazon method for getting ideas for writing, but I hadn’t thought of using it for making videos. D’oh.

Thanks for that.

Hey Peggy

Ha ha I laughed at this: “one of his many areas of expertise!” You know I’m just a regular guy, right? The only reason I know about video was because I tested it out (with a series of really, REALLY bad videos) and the results were off the chart. Personally I love to write…but I’m a weirdo like that!

Yep it should be noted that the ‘Amazon Table Of Contents’ method can be used to generate ideas for blog posts or podcasts too! Great point! Catch you later.

He is isn’t he Peggy! Yeah, video is creeping in as King of content so I wanted to step up my game this year upon his recommendation so what better way to do this then have him just tell me how to get started. And that he did!

Thanks Peggy for stopping by, really appreciate that!

Have an awesome day!

Good Morning!

I have to ditto what Diane said! I too am camera shy and have avoided videos up to this point. I know that they are extremely effective because some of the most successful people in my business opportunity are You Tube stars. They consistently put out informative videos, and this marketing strategy is working well for them.

Obviously, video marketing is here to stay and time for all of us to jump on board. I have a question for Paul – are voice over videos as successful as videos that show a person talking to the camera?

Thanks in advance!

Jamella

Thanks for stopping by – and great question.

Here’s my honest answer: I don’t actually know. Normally on a video like this I would put myself into the video at certain points – like some cut in shots of myself asking some of the questions. So that way you would see me as well as hear me. But for this video I didn’t as I have an absess under a tooth and the side of my mouth is a little swollen…

Here’s what I’d recommend to the ‘camera shy’ – start out with the kind of video I created today. That way you can get used to your voice being onscreen – and then when you get used to that you can start thinking about stepping up and introducing ‘live action.’

Good morning Jamella,

We all have to start somewhere Jamella and those video rock stars were not that in the beginning. I know I had a fear of being in front of the camera so just move past that and you’ll start cranking them out. I’ll let Paul help you with that answering your question.

Simply superb! Actionable, achievable, clear-cut steps, delivered in a most delicious voice Paul! As a former TV broadcaster, I admire people who deliver with such great tone, modulation and content:) Now why haven’t I started doing videos? “Now or never was the time”, so you’ve spurred me to action.

Thanks Adrienne and Paul.
