A Super Bowl Diary, Part One

There's no way to say, "I went to the Super Bowl" without sounding like a d-bag.

I'm acknowledging this up front. I know it, and you know it. We're all collectively aware that any piece in which the author talks about amazing things he got to do is going to make said author seem like an ass clown. Look, I've read Bill Simmons too, you know.

So at the risk of alienating all you and incurring the wrath of more people on twitter, let me just take this opportunity to point something out.

I WENT TO THE SUPER BOWL.

(Hey, if you're going to douche it up, don't pull your punches. Just own it and move along).

My view. Yeah. I know. Sorry.

Football is a dangerous game, but is the game itself in danger?

Given the popularity of the sport and the week Indianapolis just witnessed, it's almost unthinkable that anything could threaten of the dominance of the NFL in the United States. Still there is much the custodians of the game have to worry about

Manning Watch 2012: Are the Tides Turning?

Written by Laura Calaway.

The moves made by Jim Irsay thus far this offseason point toward the Colts rebuilding after one of its worst seasons in recent memory.  Irsay fired the GM and much of the coaching staff, hired a defensive-minded coach, and has repeatedly beaten the "new era" mantra into our heads through press conferences.  He's talked about how similar this situation is to 1998, when Peyton arrived into town on a white horse to rescue the Colts from the doldrums of the NFL (well, after a difficult first year).  The presumptive QB playing the role of Peyton 14 years later is Andrew Luck, a prospect so coveted that the overwhelming sentiment now is that Irsay has "moved on."  But has he?

Super Bowl Recap: The Giants Won. The Patriots Lost

Written by Nate Dunlevy.

spacer Sometimes, it really is that simple.

The Giants won.

The Patriots lost.

In one of the hardest hitting, most competitive Super Bowls ever, two teams traded haymakers until the clock ran out on one of them. Super Bowl XLVI wasn't a referendum on the way the Pats or Giants are built. It doesn't reveal any hidden depths, qualities or flaws about either team. It was just a tough, close football game where the team that had the last real possession won.

Why Peyton Can't Go Back

Written by Laura Calaway.

Adam Schefter created a new stir amongst Colts fans today with his tweet that “Peyton Manning is willing to create a contract that would contain no guaranteed money up front and would be incentive laden with bonuses.” Unfortunately, this is likely to serve as more salt in the wounds of those who would rather Jim Irsay retain Manning in Indy. To recap where we are: Peyton is not yet healthy enough to play.

spacer Colts wide receiver Pierre Garcon is one of many players whose future is up in the air. A popular figure around Indianapolis, Garcon has been making the rounds of both fans and media during Super Bowl.

The free agent appeared at a local Best Buy on Thursday to sign DVD copies of Greatest Super Bowl Moments from NFL films. Garcon was recently mentioned by Jim Irsay as a priority for the Colts. He had his best season to date in 2012, and continues to show tantalizing physical skills and could be a player on the verge of breaking out.

Peyton Manning Not Medically Cleared to Resume NFL Career

Written by Brett Mock.

What is more fun than having two stories in a row with opposite titles? Answer: NOTHING.

Colts Owner Jim Irsay wanted to be sure that Colts Nation knew that legendary quarterback Peyton Manning -- despite reports from his doctors suggesting that he is ready to take the field on Sunday -- has not passed a physical with the team and is not cleared to play football for the Indianapolis Colts.

From Irsay:

Peyton has not passed our physical nor has he been cleared to play for The Indianapolis Colts. Team statement coming on Friday.

ESPN: Peyton Manning Medically Cleared to Resume NFL Career

Written by Greg Cowan.

ESPN is reporting that doctors have cleared Peyton Manning to resume his NFL career.

While on the surface this would appear to be good news, reading the quotes, however, paints a different picture. Here is the sentence that everyone should pay close attention to:

The sources said Watkins examined Manning recently in Los Angeles and concluded the stability in his neck would have allowed the quarterback to play this Sunday if the nerves in his arm had regenerated to a satisfactory performance level.
