Original Growler Registration Opens
February 1st, 2012
Registration for popular Original Growler opens this evening at 9 PM MST. Since many people that wanted to race last year didn’t get in before it filled up, they’re making some changes this year.
Instead of having the Growler and the Half Growler on the same day, they’re having them different days. The 32 mile Half Growler will be on Saturday May 26th and the 64 mile full Growler will be on May 27th.
The first 100 entries for each race will be up for grabs tonight. The next 100 entries will open on Saturday, February 18th at 7 AM. The remainder of the entries will be available Sunday, March 4th at 9 PM.

Leadville 100 Lottery Deadline Looming
January 30th, 2012
The deadline to enter the Leadville 100 mountain bike lottery is tomorrow (January 31st). There’s a $15 fee to enter the lottery and then if you get picked, it’s $275 for the race entry. The $15 lottery fee goes to IMBA, Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation, and to other 501C3 charities locally.
If you haven’t entered yet but are planning an entering, I suggest you do it now in case you have problems with registering. Registration is online and went smoothly for me but you never know. In addition to the long time question about how many Leadville 100 mountain bike races you’ve finished, now there are questions about which bike you ride, which shoes you like, etc.
If you have the guts to sign up for the Leadman/Leadwoman, you can get into the bike race without going through the lottery and into the already full 100 mile run. You have to finish the Trail Marathon and at least one of the Silver Rush events in order to race at the 100 mile bike so you can’t just use it as a way to avoid the lottery. The Leadman/Leadwoman requires you to finish five Leadville events — Leadville Marathon, Silver Rush 50 bike or run, Leadville Trail 100 bike and run and the 10K run. The entry deadline for Leadman/Leadwoman is also tomorrow at 8 PM.
It appears that the number of entrants will go up once again this year so the additional qualifiers shouldn’t take away from the lottery. Last year I believe there were a total of 1,700 spots for the Leadville 100 mountain bike race. This year Cole Chlouber, social media person for Lifetime Fitness Athletic Events and son of the Leadville 100 founder, says the Forest Service has given them a cap of 2,000.
If 100 miles is too far for you or you don’t make it in the lottery or one of the Leadville 100 qualifiers, there are plenty of other races in the Leadville Race Series. Below are the other events.

Free National Park Entry This Weekend
January 13th, 2012
All 397 national parks across the country are offering free admission this weekend, January 14 through 16, to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Fee waiver includes: entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.
Camping probably isn’t on most people list of things to do at National Parks in snowy parts of the country for these free days but there’s still plenty to do in winter. Many National Parks such as Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone and Yosemite are good for snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
More free National Park days in 2012
- April 21-29 – National Park Week
- June 9 – Get Outdoors Day
- September 29 – National Public Lands Day
- November 10-12 – Veterans Day weekend

Backcountry Ski Film Solitaire Screening
January 12th, 2012Nick Waggoner and Zac Ramras spent the better part of two years on foot, horseback, and ski-skins travelling between some of South America’s most desolate mountains. The end product of their effort, Solitaire, is perhaps the most stunning ski film ever shot. The film features 31 different skiers and snowboarders, two of whom, Arne Backstrom and Kip Garre, passed away during production. Solitaire was selected for the Banff and Mountain Film Festival, and won IF3 Festival’s Best Cineomatography Award.
Outside Magazine is showing the backcountry ski film Solitaire on their website tonight, January 12th, 2012 at 6 PM MST. Head over to this page to see it. Join a live chat at 7 PM MST with filmmaker Nick Waggoner and skiers Kim Havell and Stephan Drake.

Western States 100 Movie Showing Benefits Manitou Incline
December 6th, 2011Another endurance movie showing is coming to Colorado Springs and it benefits the Incline Friends. The new documentary “Unbreakable: The Western States 100,” is showing at Stargazers Theatre on December 7th at 7 PM. Doors open at 6 p.m. and top ultra runners Anton Krupicka, Geoff Roes and Anita Ortiz will be there.
The film by Journeyfilm’s JB Benna follows the footsteps of four extraordinary athletes, including Krupicka and Roes of Boulder, as they prepare for the 2010 race and the daunting challenge of running 100 miles across the Sierra Nevada, some of the most rugged country in the western United States. On race day you’ll join the runners shoulder-to-shoulder as they push their limits above timberline, and then risk life and limb on hell-bent descents.
This is a must see for anyone who dreams of striding across the sky to greet the sunrise.
The evening will be topped with a question and answer discussion with Krupicka, Roes and Ortiz, some of the top ultra runners in the world. Roes won the Western States 100 in 2010, while Ortiz claimed the women’s title in 2009. Krupicka, who attended Colorado College, is a two-time winner of the Leadville 100.
Tickets cost $10 and will be available at Mountain Chalet, 226 N. Tejon St.; Colorado Running Company, 833 N. Tejon St., and 9275 N. Union Blvd, Ste. 120; and Carmichael Training Systems, 600 S. 21st St., No. 100. Tickets will also be available for $10 the day of the show, but it’s wise to purchase them early. Tickets are also available online for $11 at imATHLETE.com.
The event is a fundraiser for Incline Friends, the organization created to help implement the Manitou Incline Site Development and Management Plan and open the Incline to the public. Although it still isn’t legal to hike the Manitou Incline, the Incline Friends are working to educate users, build relationships with other groups and residents who use and live near the Incline, and organize volunteer work days.
