Guns on Campus

Friends, the TX Senate is holding a hearing tomorrow on the dangerous guns on campus bill. Have you called your Senator and Representative’s offices? Most lawmakers are looking to score political points, not ensure campus safety. Moms and dads, get on the phone.

Ask your lawmaker — have they talked to parents, students, faculty, shooting survivors? Have they read the Virginia Tech Panel Report (a non-partisan group who dedicated three months to interviewing survivors, first responders, police…)

Visit the Website of Texas for Gun Free Schools to learn more.

Small listing of groups opposed to guns on campus, or expressing serious reservations:

* 86% of campus police chiefs in the U.S.

* Texas Association of College and University Police Administrators (TACUPA)

* International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA)

* Chancellor Cigarroa, The University of Texas System

* President Powers, The University of Texas at Austin

* President Loftin, Texas A&M University

* President Bailey, Texas Tech University

* President Spaniolo, The University of Texas at Arlington

* President Rawlins, The University of North Texas

Moms and dads, get on the phone.

Community involvement and political work are genetic traits of the Thompson family. This is a certificate of gratitude from the City of Biloxi, MS to my grandmother Rebecca Thompson.

Thanks to Aunt Judith for sending it.

Drinking Liberally Mid-Cities, January 20

Just like you, we at DL were horrified by the Tucson shootings. Political violence and ugly vitriol shouldn’t have a place in our society — free discussion of ideas and issues should. Drinking Liberally is an inclusive place to come and talk politics and current events.

Texas’ newest legislative session began today and their #1 priority should be balancing the budget and filling Perry and Co.’s $25 billion hole. Let’s talk about it and we will raise a glass to the New Year and the health and well-being of our state and country.

DL Mid-Cities

Thursday, January 20, 6:30 p.m.-?
Rio Mambo, 5150 Highway 121, Colleyville. Look for our Drinking Liberally table tents.

Hosted by Kathleen Thompson and Brad Walker.

Transparency, Please

I’m a member of a group that collects money each time we meet. A routine and timely accounting for the collection of money is not offered and hasn’t been for as long as I can recall. Last year, an over commitment of hundreds of dollars was made — no one knew what we had. That really bothers me. Who takes up money and doesn’t report on what was collected?

No organization that I have ever been a part of - that’s who.

I’ve been on the executive board or in another leadership position of a political action committee, non-profit group, citizens’ committee, officially recognized college club and high school club since my teens. Even my women’s group in college took up small donations weekly, held bake sales (wherein white males had to pay $1.00 for a cookie and white women paid $0.70 for the same cookie and so on) and would turn around our small treasury report. And we’d find the time to do so with students studying full-time, along with full-time jobs.

I have asked that this present group find someone to keep a tally and report, should the person not doing it now not want to do so. I was shot down that such accounting “would be a waste of time”.

Being honest and open with other people’s money is never going to be a waste of time. Never.

How disappointing.

Political differences do not enemies make. Having dinner with Tea Party pal, who probably thinks my political views are as off as I find his. I see the person, not the politics. Why can’t everyone?

My Letter to the Editor in today’s Star-Telegram, 8 December 2010

Dear Editor,

My family, friends and everyone in earshot of us complained about the Tea Party’s presence in the Grapevine Christmas Parade.

While Democrats are excluded from paying for and working a voter registration booth at city festivals next to jewelry sales and car dealerships, another partisan group yells “go Tea Party” at a nonpolitical holiday event.

Double standards aside, a Christmas celebration is not the place for politics.

Kathleen Thompson, Grapevine
