Books I won’t get around to reading, but really should

I have been hearing a lot of super book recommendations lately. Now, before you stake me on the title of this post let me say, I love to read. I have not always loved to read. But, now I do. I remember before my kids were born, the last thing I ever wanted to do was read. I had a friend at the time who really ignited a passion in me for reading. She was our church librarian and was über patient with me. She of course would always mock me for not reading. So, really it was pure, unadulterated peer pressure that got me reading. Whatever works, right?!

I remember going into the library, plopping down in her office and saying,

“there’s nooooottthhhhiiiinnnnggg goooooood to read.” {Can you tell I whine a lot?}

She would roll her eyes, get up and walk out. This was my unspoken que to follow her into the racks. I still remember to this day the author she started me off with was, Jan Karon and the Mitford series. I ate those books up. I cut my reading teeth as it were on that series. Because this friend was patient with me I was able to remember that reading could be fun and not a chore.

As of late, I’ve been reading the Stieg Larsson books. I’m on The Girl Who Played with Fire. But that is not the only one, another one sits on my bedside table. Content Rules by CC Chapman & Ann Handley. I try to shift back and forth, but sometimes it’s hard.

Now I have 2 new recommendations from friends. The first one is Crush It by Gary Vaynerchuk and the other is Humanity: a moral history of the twentieth century by Jonathan Glover.

This is the thing I love about book recommendations. People tend to recommend what they love, not necessarily what you would love. Don’t get me wrong, they are recommending based on who I am, and their assumption of what I would like. I love that! These are books I would not necessarily pick for myself, but I really do like them.

My challenge is finding time to read all of these books. I usually only read right before bed, and that usually lasts no longer than 30 minutes, if I’m lucky. Ha!

Can a mama get an AMEN?!

So what are you guys currently reading or more like me, what are you currently avoiding reading?

Do you have any tips on fitting in reading time each day?

I was having a terrible time trying to fit reading time in after I had my daughter two years ago. Going to grad school right before that didn’t help. I slowly was getting back into it by reading before bed, or on the occasional quiet morning when I was ready for work before she woke up. I just got a Kindle for Christmas and I must say, that has helped the most. I toss it in my bag every morning and read whenever I have a few minutes. I never have to search for my place and I can turn it off quickly when it’s my turn after waiting in line.

Kim, Kim, Kim. I knew you would pipe up. Ha! I am so cheap, I know I should just do it that way. It’s $9.99 for the ebook, the audio can’t be that much more, right? Right??

Like you, I have way more books than I’ll ever read. The commute to work is an hour long, so that’s when I do my reading and editing.

My “want-to-read” list is ridiculously long. I add to it every book that’s recommended to me, which ensures I’ll never be able to read all of them.

In college I learned what made the biggest difference in how many books I got through, which was always being “in the middle of” a book, even if I’d only read a single page. So as soon as I finished a book, I immediately started another one. That way if I ever found myself with 10 minutes to kill, I wouldn’t spend 10 minutes picking out my next book, I’d just pick up whatever I was currently reading and read for 10 minutes. Somehow that made a huge difference in the amount of books I read in a year.

In case you’re interested, I host a monthly book recommendation link-up called Three Books on Thursday the first Thursday of every month (so the next one will be this Thursday, February 2). You can browse the linked recommendations by which categories are interesting to you, and add your own if you’d like!

I love reading & books! I could get lost for hours in the library or book store… it’s the perfect place to just sit.

I try to read in the evenings after the kids have gone to bed but sometimes I just get really tired and fall asleep instead, which sucks because I am in the process of reading so many books!

I have been recently compiling a list of books I want to start reading… you know in all of my spare time… LOL! I will say that right now I’m reading “Ketchup is a vegetable: and other lies moms tell themseelves” and the only time I have to read is late at night… and usually for like 15 minutes because I fall asleep with my book still open. I’d like to change that so if you come up with any tips, let me know!!!

I’m trying to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo right now. So many people have told me that the first half starts off super slow, so I’m using that as motivation to get through it. But I just haven’t had much time lately.
