How to Wear It: Cropped Sweaters

Ah, the crop top: a look that few master and too many abuse. The cropped sweater has been making a strong showing as of late (the last time we saw so many was in mohair form in the mid-nineties!), but it’s vital to take proportion play into consideration.

The key is just a peek of flesh – no more than an inch or two. It’s all about skirt or pants with a high waist. Whatever you do, don’t wear anything low-rise – or else you’re headed right into hoochie territory.

1) Helmut Lang Floats Angora and Wool-Blend Sweater: Ideal for loose layering, this fuzzy sweater needs a flowy top and a skinny jean. Wear it with a silk camisole, like this simple white one from Tibi, and a pair of J.Brand’s twill jeans in lilac for a pale winter palette.
On Net-a-Porterspacer for $460.

Tibi Racer Back Silk Camisole
On Shopbopspacer for $158.

J.Brand Denim Maria High-Rise Twill Skinny Jeans

2) Opening Ceremony Cropped Knit Sweater: This sweetly striped knit is more daring in its cut. Pair it with a flouncy skirt that sits high on the waist. Derek Lam’s Lantern skirt has the right A-line shape – in leather, it’s a choice with a twist.
At Bergdorf Goodman for $270.

3) Miu Miu Cropped Cashmere and Silk-Blend Cardigan: A classic black cardigan gets a modern update with a shrunken silhouette. Mix it up with a silk maxi skirt. Rag & Bone’s has beautifully tattered edges, which dresses down the look just enough.
On Net-a-Porterspacer for $515.

Rag & Bone Rag & Bone Feather Maxi Skirt
On Shopbop for $276.50 (from $395).
