My name is Katie Ett, and I was born on a farm in a town in central Ohio so small it’s literally known as a village. I grew up having Nesquik (back when it was still called Nestlé Quik) in 2% milk for every breakfast, cheeseburgers with French fries for every lunch, and well-done steak and mashed potatoes for every dinner. Although we called it supper, of course, because it was Ohio.
The most daring thing I ate until the age of 18 was Americanized Mexican food at Chi-Chi’s, but then I went to college at THE Ohio State University, met people who weren’t white for the first time in my life, and was introduced to crazy culinary treats such as . . . samosas.
Since moving to New York City in 2005, I’ve been trying to expand my palate with the help of my super-generous, super-adventurous boyfriend, Kamran, and his love of all foods complex and unfamiliar. But despite finding that I won’t die from eating bone marrow and that Brussels sprouts aren’t puke-worthy like everyone claims they are, I’m still scared of seafood and bloody beef (but am willing to try anything!). Luckily, I live in a city where the best seafood and bloody beef can be found.
I like “gross” foods made to taste good, familiar foods made to taste amazing, and all manner of what my boyfriend calls “wacked-out modernist cuisine”. I’ve eaten at most of the city’s best restaurants now, but I hope I write about them in a non-pretentious, non-know-it-all sort of way. I also like looking at my pictures almost as much as I like eating everything, and I don’t mean that in a pretentious way, either.
