What is it?

Whiplash is a term used to describe neck injuries caused by a sudden movement of the head, backward, forward, or sideways - similar to the motion of someone cracking a whip. The soft tissue (neck muscles and ligaments) in the spine is stretched and strained due to an abnormal motion or force applied to your neck that causes movement beyond the neck's normal range of motion.

Causes

The most common cause of whiplash, also called neck sprain or neck strain, is a car accident involving sudden acceleration or deceleration. It is an injury to the soft tissues of the neck and is usually caused by sudden extension (backward movement of the neck) and flexion (forward movement of the neck).

When a car is struck from behind by another vehicle without notice, it forces the head and neck into hyperextension (movement of joints, tendons, or muscles beyond the normal range of motion) as the seat pushes the person's torso forward - and the head and neck fall backwards. After a short delay the head and neck then recover and are thrown into a hyperflexed (flexion of beyond normal range) position.

Whiplash injuries can occur at various speeds, and even low impact rear-end collisions can cause neck injury and other soft tissue injury. Whiplash may be caused by any motion similar to a rear-end collision in a motor vehicle - other causes for whiplash injuries include:

• Assault (i.e., being punched, shoved, or shaken)
• A slip or fall where the head is suddenly and violently jolted backwards
