Avs Win On Hurricanes Turnover, 4-3
February 11, 2012, 5:10 am
Fun-ruiner.
I’m too tired and cranky to do a +/- kind of thing, also I didn’t watch the entire game, so you get a brief summary of impressions.
Firstly: Yet another rough OT loss, this time a Ryan O’Reilly goal with 1.2 second left in the period. Ouch.
The long and the short of it is this: Justin Faulk is going to turn the puck over sometimes. He’s a very young defenseman in his first year in the NHL; turnovers happen. Granted, it would be nice if they didn’t happen in the last 2 seconds of OT, but an individual mistake made by a young defenseman is, to me, a lot easier to swallow than the Canes not having a system or the “system” collapsing.
Aside from that, the Canes played another solid, if not ultimately successful, game. The Avs had their share of odd-man rushes, but not nearly as many as I’d expected coming into this game. Cam Ward had a meh night but came up big a couple times. The power play desperately needs work, but Eric Staal continues his point streak and the Hurricanes actually answered Ward’s lackluster goaltending with offensive production. The only huge issue I saw was, once again, a lackluster opening to the second period cost the Hurricanes the lead. The Hurricanes have go to get better at coming out strong.
