With 2012 just starting its interesting to see if predictions for 2011 came through or not. At LeWeb 2010, just before the end of the year, Jeremiah Owyang talked about trends for 2011.
He talked about “Social Media And Big Business” in 2011. Was he right? What do you think?
In less than two weeks the European Search World will gather in London to attend, network and share knowledge at SES London 2012. Like every year it promises to be a great event with a great line up of speakers. State of Search will off course be covering the event and in cooperation with our friends at SEO Chicks there was the contest to win tickets.
Going up to the conference we will also be shedding our light on the event. We have asked several speakers at the event to answer some questions. Questions about SES off course, but also about the market in general: where do they feel the market is heading.
Today we listen to Marcus Tober, CTO of SearchMetrics. … Continue Reading
Last week Freshegg had a #BingFriday. On this day they specifically looked at Bing and they specifically asked people to use Bing. I thought that was a very nice and smart idea. Bing can use the attention with all the talk about Google.
We already saw the questions they asked Bing’s director Stefan Weitz yesterday. One of the other things they posted was this infographic about Bing. A little bit of Bing, in numbers. … Continue Reading

The world of tools is going like crazy at the moment. And for a reason. Tools after all can give you insights which can help you build your brand or product. Our good friend Andy Betts wrote a great piece on that yesterday over at Searchenginewatch.
Searchmetrics is one of the tools which has been popping up everywhere in the past year. Searchmetrics today announces a new feature. They are launching an online dashboard for its Searchmetrics Essentials software with complimentary search and social metrics to anyone. Without an account you can now get information on organic and paid search visibility and visibility on Social Networks. … Continue Reading
Reporting on the success of your SEO work by using ranking reports alone doesn’t really paint a full picture. Good SEO should be about way more than just improving rankings; for starters is your client making more money, how’s their organic traffic growing, what does their brand look like online? Using ranking reports in conjunction with other metrics can provide a wider picture of how your website is performing and help to educate the client as to what they are getting from SEO, and what areas might need more attention.
However, despite explaining other important KPI’s and trying our best to explain how to measure true success and value; the one thing clients often want to know about first is where their pages are ranking. Sometimes this question can come before discussing traffic, conversions and other such metrics that actually make a real difference to their business. … Continue Reading
Last week Freshegg decided to provide us with some attention for Bing. They posted about Bing, made infographics and did a lot more. The idea was to “encourage people to break the Google habit and use Bing on Fridays instead.”: BingFriday.
A very nice initiative from Freshegg and much needed in these days when most of the talk is about Google (yes, we are guilty of that too). One thing Freshegg did was do a Q&A with Bing’s Stefan Weitz. … Continue Reading

Now that many of us in the search marketing space have come to terms with some of the dilemmas associated with Google Search Plus Your World (GSPYW), Google’s new privacy policy and the endless stream of figures coming out of Google celebrating the number of “users” of the Google+ platform it’s high time that brands and sites of all shapes and sizes start weighing up whether participating in Google+ is right for them (if they’ve not already done so).
I will make a few points up front that will hopefully help you decide whether or not Google+ is right for you and your site, but I will also raise some key concerns with indexation and potential manipulation of competitor search results that I have not seen widely covered thus far. … Continue Reading
