About us

PeerIndex is a web technology company that is algorithmically mapping out the social web. The way we see it, the social web now allows everyone endless possibilities in discovering new information on people, places, and subjects.

We believe that the traditional established authorities and experts - journalists, academics, are now joined by a range of interested and capable amateurs and professionals. As this locus of authority shifts, many new authorities emerge.

PeerIndex strives to become the standard that identifies, ranks, and scores these authorities -- and help them benefit from the social capital they have accrued.

PeerIndex was founded in 2009 by Azeem Azhar, an Internet entrepreneur and investor who previously worked at the Economist and Guardian; Bill Emmott, former editor-in-chief of The Economist; and Ditlev Schwanenflugel, formerly of McKinsey & Co.

The team

Azeem Azhar, CEO

Azeem Azhar is an Internet entrepreneur and investor with a background in journalism having worked previously at The Economist and Guardian. Azeem has been active developing services on the Internet since 1992, as a student. He was involved in the launch of The Guardian, The Economist and BBC web services during the 1990s; as well as having a fin-de-siecle/Internet bubble escapade with an incubator between 1999 and 2001. More recently, he was has been an investor in Powerset, New Energy Finance, Daylife, Seedcamp and Dopplr.

Simon Cast, Head of Products & Engineering

Simon Cast began his career in Space Engineering, where he developed a Fortran realtime program to automate satellite operations. He then travelled round the world, thought not in orbit, before a stint in the Australian Army. Simon has a background in numerical computing and modelling and is a co-founder ProductCamp London.

Matija Rijavec, Lead Developer

Matija Rijavec is our lead front-end engineer and is responsible the customer-interfaces to PeerIndex, including our API. Native of Slovenia, Matija trained at the University of Ljubljana before joining Domenca as a web developer where he focused on social media product development. For fun, Matija creates ingenious hacks and mashups of any social Web application with an API he can get his hands on.

Mitja Poljsak, Platform Developer

Mitja Poljsak is our AWS and platform specialist. Mitja started out in 1998 working for the Faculty of Economics web team at University of Ljubljana. After graduation Mitja moved to Orion before joining Domenca in 2006 where he focused on platform and backend development. Mitja has been instrumental in building our key distributed processing platform.

Domen Grabec, Search and Analysis Developer

Prior to joining PeerIndex, Domen worked at Union Square Ventures investment called Zemanta, where he focused on machine learning and natural language processing. Domen prefers the problems that make his braincells work and focuses on our search and analysis algorithms. When he is not dancing with bits in a processor he likes to dance Salsa (and was recently featured on Slovenia's Got Talent wearing a zorro mask).

Alister Bulman, Platform Developer

Specialising in scaling and infrastructure, Alister brings a wide variety of knowledge to PeerIndex from previous roles. A long-time developer, he became interested in the internet in 1987 - before the general availablity of the world wide web, and has been helping to create his own little parts of it since the mid '90s.

Ervin Strnisnik, Marketing Manager

Ervin Strnisnik is our Marketing Manager. Ervin started out as an IT administrator in the Slovenian government before moving into the online world as co-founder of Blogorola and then Head of Marketing at Mimovrste, an online retailer. Ervin's passionate love of music lead him to co-found Radio Nula with a friend.

Rodney the Hamster, Cricetus cricetus

Rodney is our very own scapegoat and chaos-hampster, believed to be responsible for occasional downtime on our processing platform and front-end web servers.
