A Bit About Allison

This isn’t my first attempt blogging, but after a year of reading other blogs, I have the motivation to follow through, thus I created “Life’s a Bowl.”

I am a 20-something, optimistic, spunky recent college graduate with a BS in Severe Special Education.  On a daily basis I am trying to balance a life filled with adventures with my family, friends, career, and passions.  I am fortunate to be starting my first “real world” job in September, teaching special education at a local middle school.

10 other random things about me…

1.  I use A LOT of abbreviations… “def”= definitely, “totes”= totally, “for series”= seriously, “TJ’s”= Trader Joes, “WF”= Whole Foods, “the Teet”= Harris Teeter, and many more!

2.  I enjoy spending time in the kitchen cooking recipes that I have starred in magazines, seen on others blogs, or just “winging it” (creating my own original recipes).  Fortunately, I have not experienced any catastrophes just “winging it” (knock on wood)!  But unfortunately, I have not had much time in recent months to cook full meals (other for 60+ people at our engagement party) due to completing a full-time teaching practicum, graduating from college, working multiple summer jobs, attending professional development courses for my “real world” job, and studying for the GRE… Thus, dinners frequently are “catch-can” style…

spacer 3.  I enjoy a good work out- the time I spend at the gym is my “me” time.  I grew up playing completive basketball and lacrosse and spent much of my free time practicing or competing in tournaments.  I am at a point in my life where I use the gym as a time to clear my mind and escape from my daily demands.  Most often, I run, ellipticize (the elliptical), glide (the Gazelle), or lift weights (which does not happen as frequently as it should).

4.  I am a (sale) shopping fanatic!  As any typical girl, I love to shop, especially whenever I see a sale- who does not like getting 2+ items for the price of one?!  Whether it is at a clothing store or the grocery store, if it is on SALE, count me in!

5.  I love, love, love, fresh flowers!  I think that giving and receiving flowers is one of the simplest ways to show someone that you care or are thinking about them (not to mention, they compliment and spruce up any room)!  My favorites are in the pink/ orange/ yellow hues, and specifically I adore peonies and lilies.

6.  I enjoy seeing movies (in the theater) and sporting events- I think my lack of patience and inability to sit still for extended periods of time inhibits me from watching movies or athletic events at home… Maybe I just don’t have the patience to wait until the movie is available to rent and I have to see the movie sooner rather than later?  Nothing is better than going to a baseball game on a warm summer night or watching a basketball game in the winter.  And yes, I sneak in my own drinks and snacks (a perk of large handbags)- I refuse to pay $5+ for a drink or snack that will ultimately make me feel bloated and sick a couple hours later.

spacer spacer 7.  I am currently trying to convince my momma and fiancé that we should (aka NEED) to get a new puppy.  In the beginning of July, our dog “Rosie” of 14 years had to be put down due to health related reasons- this was a very hard decision although I know she is in a better place.  This experience has shown me that I’m not the best at saying “goodbye”… So for the past few weeks, I’ve been nagging my momma and fiancé about getting (ME) a new puppy and naming her “Daisy” (yup, I chose the name “Rosie” and I’m sticking with the flower theme)!

spacer 8.  I love to travel!  When I was younger, I was lucky enough to go on vacations with my family whenever I had a school break.  In the winter and springs, we frequently went to Colorado (or some snow-covered mountain) and in the summer we went to the beach.  Some of my favorite vacation memories are from:

  • Santa Fe, New Mexico: all-natural beauty… I’d love to go back!
  • The Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas: who does not enjoy a tropical beach getaway?!
  • The Big Island of Hawaii: there were so many different environments
  • Italy: I went with a student group my junior year in high school and toured around the major cities, as well as the surrounding old, smaller towns

Some day I hope to travel to Greece, back to Italy and New Mexico, and some beach lost in the middle of the ocean.

spacer 9.  I am slowly but surely learning that I cannot accomplish all of my to-do’s every day- there are only 24 hours in a day, and sometimes that means there just is not enough time to do E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.

spacer 10.  I have learned that there is not one definition of beauty- everyone is beautiful in their own individual way.

That’s great- congrats on getting your masters! I just graduated in May with a BS in Severe Special Education and already thinking of heading back to get my master’s… I’m thinking either Early Elementary so I can teach in an inclusive setting or looking into ABA certification?! School starts next week, gah- t’s so weird to switch from the role of student to teacher! Thanks so much for the compliments, hope you enjoy spacer

Did you live in Boston before transferring? I live in Miami, so it’s quite far from home. But I still got two years since I changed my major lol

Nope, I didn’t know anyone when I transferred! I’m also from the east coast and it’s pretty easy/ cheap to get flights into Boston on JetBlue or Southwest…
