Anyone who has experienced Lake Merced’s new course has heard that music and felt those feelings. Now we know what Rees Jones was trying to create. Diamonds and rough. She’s hell to play, but she’s a jewel in our eye. She’ll challenge us, frustrate us and beguile us. She’ll shroud herself in mystery and intrigue; she’ll tempt us and repel us and then, just when we’re beaten, she’ll open her arms and hold us close. She’ll force us to plumb the depths of our golfing soul in search of a game that will unlock her many secrets. But unlock them we will, and in the process we will each profit in our own way from a lifetime of exploration and adventure. In the end, that’s why we’ll love her forever.
