Meet The REAL Iron Man!

April 22nd 2010 08:42
spacer

NASA will be sending a humanoid robot by the name of Robonaut2 to the International Space Station space shuttle Discovery mission this September. Not only does he look cool, he lifts weights as well! (Next thing you know, he will have a recurring role on "The Jersey Shore!") He was created by General Motors and NASA. R2 as he is also known as (Is he related to R2D2?) has the dexterity of a human, allowing him to be able to work alongside "real" humans, and can lift four times more than his predecessor. (Are you sure that isn't Robert Downey Jr. in there?)

Check out his cool pictures! (Hey, he's kinda cute...a few more "pieces" and real men will have some REAL competition!)

Amazing Magnets! Healing Damaged Hearts!

April 22nd 2010 08:11
spacer

Researchers are using magnets to heal hearts that have suffered from traumatic injuries. The magnets are being used in combination with stem cell therapy. Dr. Eduardo Marban, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles, (Also known as the hospital for the rich and famous!) said in a news release from the institute, "Once injected into a patient's artery, many stem cells are lost due to the combination of tissue blood flow, which can wash out stem cells, and cardiac contraction, which can squeeze out stem cells. We needed to find a way to guide more of the cells directly to the area of the heart that we want to heal."

Marban and his team of researchers have managed to manipulate cardiac stem cells by loading them with microscopic pieces of iron. The cells were injected into mice who had suffered heart attacks and magnets were placed in that area (like the dying muscle area in the photo above) The cells are then retained at the damaged site, giving the area optimal opportunity for recovery. The procedure is called magnet targeting. This method is being considered for other stem cell therapies and its possible potential. Marban and his wife have filed a patent for this procedure! (Good for them! This is ground-breaking stuff! Maybe one day it can be used to heal brain injuries and maybe even spinal cord injuries!....Science is a beautiful thing!)

Indecisive About Devices? The Incredible Vs. The iPHONE!

April 22nd 2010 08:09

Most of us know by now the so-called "leak" of the iPhone 4G (possibly a marketing tactic! Don't believe the hype!) But if you haven't, check out the video below! There are the rumors that Apple intentionally leaked the upcoming iPhone (what did I just say?) months before it was scheduled to debut, in order to deflect the attention away from the launching of the Droid Incredible (I like that name!....No, I LOVE the name!)

Despite the incident everyone is wondering: "Will the iPhone 4G and the Droid Incredible be competitors?"

The Droid Incredible, making its spectacular debut next week (I can't wait!) will have the advantage of being the first one out the gate before the iPhone 4G comes out. The Incredible will appeal to those who like the Android OS, and anyone who has ever been tempted to buy any of the previous iPhones will be enamored with the 4G. (Personally, I think they both look the same but since you have to pay for the iPhone's Apps, that makes a BIG difference!)

If you need help deciding which one is for you (I want the Incredible, it looks like the iPhone anyway!) here is a comparison of the iPhone 4G and the Droid Incredible, based upon what is currently known about the two phones.

spacer

The Android and iPhone operating systems will be very similar. The iPhone's new interface will allow the creation of folders on the home screen and app multitasking, two advantages Android previously had over the iPhone. The Incredible will be running a special skin over the Android OS called HTC Sense that makes it easier to access features and information than the standard Android user interface. The iPhone 4G will have full access to around 185,000 apps in the App Store. The Android system currently has less than 50,000 apps, though the number is increasing exponentially everyday!

When it comes to actual hardware, the comparisons get a little bit shakier. The specs for the Droid Incredible are displayed on the product announcement, however, the iPhone 4G specs are mostly educated guesses by Gizmodo, the tech news site that purchased the lost device for $5,000 and took a look inside. The Droid Incredible has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, one of the most powerful in mobile computing and much faster than the iPhone 3GS processor. It is possible that the 1GHz A4 processor in the new iPad could have made its way into the iPhone 4G, offering much better competition to the Incredible. Gizmodo was unable to even view the processor during its inspection (That seems odd!)

Some things are clear though. The iPhone 4G screen is "slightly smaller" than the 3GS screen, which definitely makes it smaller than the Droid Incredible screen (3GS screen is 3.5 inches, Incredible screen is 3.7 inches).
Yet the iPhone 4G screen might prove to be more impressive. Gizmodo said the iPhone 4G screen had a "much higher resolution than on a 3GS," speculating it could even have a 960x640 resolution. The Droid Incredible uses the same display as the Nexus One, which was universally praised by consumers for its spectacular screen (Although it is a cool looking screen, it still reminds me of the iPhone i.e. there isn't THAT much difference!) Still, the Incredible's resolution is 480x800, which could mean the iPhone 4G trumps it.

The Droid Incredible has an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, certainly impressive for a phone. However, the iPhone 4G OS reportedly has a front facing camera (Cool!) The iPhone 4G still has a regular camera on the back (no word on megapixels), but the one on the front is a long-awaited feature for many iPhone users that will allow video calls, Skype over Wi-Fi for instance, and new app functionality.

The iPhone 4G battery is also nearly 20 percent larger than previous models and that means more battery life, though it's hard to tell how much. The iPhone 3GS is rated to last 5 hours of talk or Internet use over a 3G connection; the Droid Incredible also rates in at just over 5 hours of use. That means the iPhone 4G could have an advantage in battery life. But the real kicker when comparing the Droid Incredible and the iPhone 4G is the carrier network. The iPhone 4G has a micro-SIM card slot, which means it cannot run on Verizon (the Incredible's carrier) and will likely run on the traditional iPhone carrier, AT&T. This is an important consideration for those who want Internet access via 3G because Verizon is widely recognized as having more 3G coverage and better 3G capacity than AT&T, especially in metropolitan areas. (Yeah! Go Verizon!) Of course, other factors will play into the comparison when Apple reveals the full details for the iPhone 4G with price being one of the biggest factors potential iPhone buyers will be anxious to know. (I'm sure it will cost an arm and 3 legs!)

Just Go With The Flo! Record TV Shows On Your Phone!

April 21st 2010 08:30
spacer

Qualcomm's FLO TV will provide subscribers with the ability to record shows off the air. (That would be amazing! Recording on your phone! Who would need a DVR device?) AT&T has two phone devices that can receive the broadcasts through a FLO TV also known as "AT&T Mobile TV," while Verizon Wireless has two that pick up broadcasts also known as "V Cast Mobile TV." According to Qualcomm and statistics, subscribers have not warmed up to the idea of having television on their portable devices. (Personally, I think it's great especially for people who work by themselves or a 3rd shift job, it helps to beat the boredom!) but Qualcomm said that "it aims to change that in the second half of this year by giving buyers more flexibility."

Humor: iPants For Your iPhone!

There would be many people who would agree that technology and fashion do not go well together, especially if clothes are inspired by gadgets, and at most, they may end up looking geeky or a tad bit nerdish. (In this case, VERY geeky! Well, at least the iPAD in your pocket would give you a LEGITIMATE reason for your pants to be sagging!)

Abnormal Rhythms? Another Link To Alzheimer Disease!

April 20th 2010 08:30
spacer

Yesterday, a gene linked to Alzheimer's Disease was profiled. Today, we profile people with atrial fibrillation, a form of abnormal heart rhythm, which makes them more likely than others to develop dementia including Alzheimer's Disease, a new study finds. The presence of atrial fibrillation also predicted higher death rates in dementia patients, especially among younger patients in the group studied, meaning under the age of 70.
"This leaves us with the finding that atrial fibrillation, independent of everything else, is a risk factor [for dementia]," said Dr. Gary Kennedy, director of geriatric psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. "This is adding one more brick in the road toward understanding that cardiovascular disease is a major risk factor for dementia." (Well, yeah, if the blood isn't flowing to the brain properly and blood feeds the brain, that's gonna cause some issues, such as a stroke, shown below
