Our Interview with Sam Cohen aka Yellowbird: It goes straight to the loins, and busy people like that

I can't remember exactly how I came across Yellowbirds' latest album The Color, but I'm glad that I did because it was one of the more interesting albums I listened to last year. Usually for me, the 'interesting' label is applied to some originally weird avant garde shit, but this album is far from experimental.

Our Interview with Dred Scott: Is this a serious question?

Dred Scott.

You delicious son of a bitch.

I love the music this man makes. The aggressive style of play that is equal parts cool, sophisticated and punch you in the face awesome.

I could just sit here all day and let the sounds of his playing soak my shirt till my Foofa from Yo Gabba Gabba tattoo is showing through my white Hanes v-neck tees.

Math Rock: #1 Singles and Their Impact On World Events

spacer
SYFFAL.com’s Math Rock is an attempt to forge deep connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, like siblings who look nothing alike, like Black women who date Asian men. My Math Rock premise is that whichever song was the #1 seller worldwide in any given year had a major impact on seminal world events that year. I can only offer the following examples to support my theory. 1935 – Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” We all know Bing’s song is really about railing lines of coke to get through the holidays. Like Spaulding Smails, he claims he bought it from a Negro. The same year, Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California. How do you think Earhardt stayed awake for that whole flight? That’s right, the yayo. That trip took something like 100 hours because planes only flew, like, 10 mph back in the day. 1948 - Mahalia Jackson’s “Move On Up a Little Higher” In theory, this is a gospel...

Stop Sleeping: Silverchair – Young Modern

spacer
Do you know how many people I’ve told about this album? 531 A couple of months ago I nominated in our roundtable poll and I was the only one who voted for it. This is a sign that I need to tell more people. So listen up you Autralian-hating piece of shits. When I tell people of about Silverchair 92.4% of the time they repulsively say: ‘That band from the 90s?’ and 7.6% of the time they sarcastically sing ‘Fat boy, Wait til tomorrrrrow.’ Well….FYI…. Silverchair has come a long way from Frog Stomp, an album that they recorded at 16 years of age. Need Convincing? Fact: the album title, Young Modern, was the nick name Van Dyke Parks gave to Silverchair front man, Daniel Johns. Yes, the same Van Dyke Parks who collaborated with Brian Wilson as a lyricist and composer on one the greatest albums in rock history: Smile. Parks also happened to compose the orchestral arrangements for 3 songs on this album. Still need...

Laugh At What I Love - Madonna's Super Bowl Performance

spacer
There are two kinds of people on this planet (gingers not included): people who feel the need to fucking gripe over shit they can't get behind regardless if people care about their fucking opinion or not, and people who appreciate shit for what it is, regardless of whether or not they get behind it for reasons beyond something to masturbate to. If you are one of the former, you probably shat on Madonna's Super Bowl performance. That means, regardless of your past experience with her music or masturbating to her, you chose to shit on her for any number of reasons, but you were probably a shitload more vocal about hating it than the rest of us were for not hating it. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed that muthafucker. Yes, I'm the one. If you're not one of those annoying mut...

Concert Review: HYPER CRUSH @ The Roxy - Night Wave Record Release Party

spacer

Friday night at the Roxy for Hyper Crush, I expected to walk into a time warp a la John Cusak in Hot Tub Time Machine, with everyone rocking their best 80/90s style neon beach and ski attire that they long forgot about. After all I heard this is what was to be expected at one of their shows. Instead I felt like Marty McFly, while rocking my flip brim Veloce (thanks Cameron) neon blue hat, black t-shirt tagged with "Venice Beach" neon colors, walking into a room full of your regular dressed LA too cool for school hipsters. After all everyone has an image to upkeep right? Okay, I lied there were some people in neon like I was, but there was definitely a lackluster amount.

That didn't take away from the ridiculous show put on by Hyper Crush as they came in true fashion; Donny Fontaine rocking a throwback to Vanilla Ice look, Holly Valentine in her black hot pants, gold jacket, denim hat and big gold earings, and keytar,...
