"Sorry, but the “That user may never have purchased that item in the first place” excuse is the lamest of the freetards excuses. I download a fair share of music to listen to, 99% gets deleted after I listen to it. It saves me the time to go into a record store and listen to it there. Even the 1% are individual songs that I wouldn't have bought a whole cd for anyway. Well I actually don't have to worry about it at all, since downloading is legal in the Netherlands (ruled by court). For now anyway. We do however pay an extra fee on blank cds and dvds to compensate for "loss of sales". Yeah, also on dvds I use to store personal stuff like pictures or documents." More »

Candlestick Dock Promises a Romantic, But Geeky, Valentine’s Day Dinner
Vibram’s FiverFingers shoes creep me out, but I understand the appeal of footwear that feels like it’s barely there. The Swiss Barefoot Company thinks the same way, but has instead created an ultra-durable sock that’s worn like a shoe. Continue reading »

"this is a really cool hybrid of science and nature. It's funny to think that to achieve such a seemingly natural process such as walking without shoes is achieved through the use of kevlar and other synthetic materials. Wish I could see a use in them but walking to campus in a pair of socks just will never seem right." More »

Why Updates for Your Android Phone Take So Long
Many of us point to custom UI skins as one of the main reasons Android updates take so long to reach certain phones. But according a Motorola exec, that’s not really the case. It’s the hardware itself. Continue reading »

"I agree on the handset front with updates, but with so many handsets from a long timeline then you can't expect an update all the time, but the same goes for Apple, Siri on an old iPhone - but if you brought an Android phone for £100 in the last 12 months then I don't think you an expect the latest and greatest updates for the next 2 years, but haveing said that I know someone who purchased a Sony Xepira Mini for £130 and he will be getting ICS on that in April, which is great progress in a standard handset. As for the Apps I also agree to an extent, but it may be patchy in places but the Android market is very open and mostly free, I have never had much of a need to buy on app, but if I'm looking for a new app, say a good weather app with a great widget interface I'll download 4-5 of the best scoring weather apps play about with them and keep the best one, which is usually great - in this case the UK Met Office app for android is amazing. I have had a few droids over the years and I have never had a problem running a new app on a current phone, and rarely had an issue running an new app on a old phone. But to state that android is shit because the odd low end phone doesn't get an update is wrong, because even if you brought a low end phone with the latest OS over every year over 3 years it would still be £200 cheaper than buying a iPhone. And in general the Andoid market does have some poor apps, I think everyone can see that, but I can't use that as an excuse to demean the tons of high quality professional apss that are also on that market, because it is open and mostly free you are going to get some poor apps, that is the nature of a free and open market."
