Remove-Generator-Meta-Tag WordPress Plugin
Yesterday, I noticed that the template tag, which existed inside the default WordPress theme and added the Generator meta tag to the HTML head area, has been replaced by an internal action. This change makes the removal of that specific meta tag a bit harder for users. I can understand that the project may use the generator metatag for statistical purposes, but, on the other hand, it reveals the WordPress version, which makes it easy for automated scanners to locate a confirmed-to-be-vulnerable WordPress version. Remove-Generator-Meta-Tag is a very small plugin, an one-liner actually, that gently removes the action that writes the Generator meta tag to your HTML pages.
Installation
To install the plugin just upload the remove-generator-meta-tag.php file inside the wp-content/plugins/ directory and activate it through the administration panel. No configuration is required.
License
Remove-Generator-Meta-Tag is an open-source project, released as Free Software under the terms of the Apache License version 2.

May 9th, 2008 at 3:10 pmThanks for bringing it to my attention. I’d say your plugin is more sophisticated and has some nice extra features, like the ability to replace and fake the wordpress version. I just needed to remove that metatag and the only way to remove the default action that generated it was through a plugin. It was not meant to clone the functionality of your plugin. :)
Thanks for your feedback.

January 6th, 2009 at 10:54 amHi George Notaras,
Nice post. I have used this plugin for my blog . This was having the generator tag before and i have read some tutorials that hackers will find the sites to hack if we have a generator tag to find.
Thanks

May 20th, 2009 at 7:27 amTHANK YOU for this small but efficient plugin !
Personally I don’t like fancy plugins as I don’t want to overload my WP site.
“Remove-Generator-Meta-Tag” just go straight to the point and this is what I wished.
Hope it will be updated for WP future releases if necessary.
Thanks again ! :) -
