Philip Smith (1827-1915) and Elizabeth Bray Smith (1833-1914)

by Ed Barnard — published on September 4th, 2006

Thanks to the Ontario Genealogy mailing list, I think I’ve located my great grandparents Smith. Philip and Elizabeth Smith:

www.ewbarnard.com/ancestry/getperson.php?personID=I8235&tree=barnard

came to Ontario Canada from Cornwall. They lived and died in Mariposa Township in southern Victoria County, Ontario well into the 20th century. Here is what I learn:

From the transcript of Smith’s Cemetery, which is near Woodville Ontario: Smith / Philip / 1827-1915 /
Elizabeth Bray /1833-1914. Woodville is on the border between Mariposa and Eldon Townships. Mariposa the Banner Township is on line at www.ourroots.ca .

Thanks Marilyn!

Philip and Elizabeth Smith had several children in the mid-1800s, including John. John came across the border into Michigan to work on a farm near George and Elizabeth Smith. I suspect George was John’s uncle - so more than one Smith family probably came together from Cornwall to Ontario. John, in Grand Ledge Michigan near Lansing, met Lola May Lawrence.

They came back to his parents’ house in Mariposa Township Ontario. They married in Ontario and had their first child Nellie May in Ontario. Uncle Ron does remember meeting Nellie at least once before she died. I have papers passed down from Uncle Ron naming the members of John Smith’s family, including his parents Philip and Elizabeth, and all their birth dates; naming the members of Lola’s mother’s family (Hannah Grinnell); naming the members of Lola’s father’s family (Samuel Lawrence). The papers were probably all written shortly after John and Lola May married and returned to Michigan.

Reynoldsville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania 1880s

by Ed Barnard — published on July 31st, 2006

Grandfather’s memo says one of George Allen and Rose Irwin’s daughters married a Corbett, and lived at Reynoldsville Pennsylvania. Here’s an 1880s photo from Reynoldsville, “From the Family Album of Thomas and Julianna Reynolds, founders of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.”

www.iarelative.com/reynolds.htm

As for which daughter? That has to be Isabella. The census shows John H. and Isabel Corbett living in Jefferson County 1880. He was a dry goods merchant.

Dear Eugene, Wayne, and Mary Louise, and respective Families:

Search the TNG Network for our surnames

by Ed Barnard — published on July 29th, 2006

Are you looking for a specific surname? There is now a shared index of individuals, that you can search. The TNG (The Next Generation of Genealogy) users have put together the shared index. It’s like the old GENDEX site that died a couple of years ago.

I have our top 30 surnames at the bottom of each post. Click on the link, and you’ll see everyone’s listings for that surname. Enjoy!

Update from Dallas

by Jake Barnard — published on July 28th, 2006

Yep - thats right, I am in Dallas all of this week.  I fly back to Fargo (and then pick up my car and head to Jamestown of course) tomorrow afternoon.

I have a big post on it over on my personal blog - so check it out.  It is a pretty exciting post.  On a side note, I finally bothered to register JakeBarnard.com for myself.

J. Davis Barnard’s Great Grandfather

by Ed Barnard — published on July 26th, 2006

We found a misplaced folder of my grandfather Barnard’s notes! Here is part of what he writes as “genealogical memories” addressed to his three children:

“George Allen Barnard, my great grandfather, came to Western
Pennsylvania from near Hartford, Connecticut about 1835 selling and
repairing clocks. He took up land on Cowanshannock Creek. Later he
married a widow, Rose Irwin, the mother of three children. One of those
children, David Johnston Irwin became a minister of the Presbyterian
Church and served for years as pastor of the Ebenezer Presbyterian
Church in Indiana County, Pa.”

The above is from the memo dated November 11, 1965.

Did some remodeling

by Ed Barnard — published on July 23rd, 2006

Hey everybody, and Welcome spacer

I made various formatting changes this weekend to better integrate the two portions of the site. It should now be easier to navigate, both for we humans and for the google search spiders.

If you have suggestions on the format, I’d love to hear them. What works best for you?

Barnard Wedding Plans progressing

by Jake Barnard — published on July 10th, 2006

Well here is another wedding update for you guys!

Jennie and I met with our photographer this weekend and had some pictures taken. She is also making our invitations, so those should be ready asap as well. I am waiting for a few additional addresses from Mom (Susan) and then those should be hitting mail box’s soon! We also stopped by the craft store and got some crafty type things for the wedding - so all in all it was a good wedding weekend.

I will keep everyone updated! Remember - Sept. 23rd is coming up faster and faster!

Dierlams from Vadenrod, Hesse, Germany

by Ed Barnard — published on July 9th, 2006

I received email today from one of the last four farmers in Vadenrod, Germany. Vadenrod celebrated its 750 year anniversary in 2001. The history book names the Dierlam family who came to Texas in 1848!
